Sri Vijaya Puram, April 14: Ward 1 Councillor Shahul Hameed has sought development of a proper vegetable market at Haddo, saying local vendors are continuing to operate from a roadside footpath without shelter or basic facilities.
In a representation to the authorities, Hameed said the absence of a permanent shed has left vendors exposed to harsh sun and heavy rain, affecting both working conditions and daily business. He has proposed that the open land on the opposite side of the road be developed into a dedicated market space with a shed and other basic infrastructure.
At present, vegetable sellers are functioning from an informal roadside stretch, a situation that has evolved over time in the absence of a designated vending zone. The arrangement has led to congestion in the area and made access difficult for both pedestrians and customers.
Hameed said a planned market space would provide vendors with protection from the weather and help improve the overall organisation of the locality. He has argued that the current lack of infrastructure not only affects livelihoods but also reduces customer footfall during periods of rain or extreme heat.
The demand comes amid continuing difficulties for vendors, who rely largely on temporary and makeshift arrangements that offer only limited protection. Prolonged exposure to heat affects both sellers and perishable produce, while rain disrupts business and damages stock.
The issue has also drawn attention to wider civic concerns linked to informal roadside markets, including congestion, uneven surfaces and drainage problems during wet weather. Residents who use the market have also pointed to the need for a more orderly and permanent setup.
The councillor’s proposal centres on shifting the market to the vacant land opposite the current site and providing the basic infrastructure needed for daily operations. No formal response from the authorities had been issued at the time of writing.
