Zojila Tunnel Breakthrough Brings All-Weather Ladakh Link Closer

Date:

New Delhi, June 10: A major milestone was achieved on Tuesday in one of India’s most challenging infrastructure projects as the breakthrough of the main tunnel at the eastern portal of the Zojila Tunnel was completed, bringing year-round road connectivity between Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh significantly closer to reality.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari witnessed the breakthrough at Minamarg in Kargil district, describing the development as a landmark achievement in India’s infrastructure journey.

The ₹6,800 crore project, being constructed between Baltal and Minamarg along National Highway-1, is designed to provide all-weather connectivity across the Zojila Pass, a strategic mountain route that remains inaccessible for several months each year due to heavy snowfall and harsh weather conditions.

Stretching nearly 14 kilometres, the bi-directional tunnel is among the country’s most ambitious mountain engineering projects. Built at elevations ranging from 2,900 to 3,310 metres above sea level, the project traverses some of the most difficult geological and climatic terrain in the Himalayan region.

Officials said the breakthrough marks the successful completion of a critical construction phase and brings the tunnel closer to becoming operational.

Once completed, the tunnel is expected to transform transportation in the region by reducing travel time between Sonamarg and Minamarg from nearly two hours to approximately 30 minutes. The reduction is expected to result in substantial savings in fuel consumption and transportation costs while improving travel reliability.

The project is also expected to enhance road safety by reducing exposure to avalanches, snowstorms and landslides that frequently disrupt movement along the existing route.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the tunnel has been designed with modern safety features, including advanced ventilation systems, automatic fire detection mechanisms, CCTV surveillance networks and dedicated cross-passage facilities for pedestrians.

Despite difficult working conditions, including extreme winter temperatures, heavy snowfall and complex geological formations, construction has progressed steadily with the involvement of engineers, workers, consultants and contractors working under the supervision of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).

To address the unique challenges posed by the region, the project includes extensive support infrastructure such as eight cut-and-cover sections, four bridges, 40 culverts, avalanche protection systems, snow galleries, catch dams and specially designed approach roads.

Government officials believe the tunnel will have far-reaching economic and social benefits. Improved connectivity is expected to boost tourism, facilitate trade and improve access to remote areas that remain isolated during winter months.

The project is also viewed as strategically significant from a national security perspective. Year-round connectivity will enable faster movement of troops, military equipment, supplies and logistics to forward areas, enhancing operational preparedness in the region.

Speaking on the occasion, Gadkari said the Zojila Tunnel represents more than just a transportation project and will serve as a gateway to development for the people of the region.

The minister also revealed that road and tunnel projects worth approximately ₹18,000 crore are currently under implementation between Kargil and Leh-Ladakh. Among these is the Kargil-Zanskar-Padum highway project, aimed at improving access to the Zanskar region and strengthening strategic connectivity.

Additional bypass projects are also being developed around Leh to ease congestion and facilitate smoother traffic movement towards Srinagar, Manali and Khardung La.

The breakthrough ceremony was attended by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Members of Parliament and senior government officials. Ladakh Lieutenant Governor V. K. Saxena joined the event virtually.

The completion of the Zojila Tunnel is expected to be one of the most transformative infrastructure developments in the Himalayan region, linking communities, strengthening economic opportunities and improving strategic mobility throughout the year.
