Sri Vijaya Puram/New Delhi, June 10: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Tuesday announced a series of programmes to commemorate Prime Minister Narendra Modi becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister, a milestone officially achieved on June 10 when he surpassed the tenure record of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
According to official figures, Modi completed 4,399 days in office as an elected Prime Minister, overtaking Nehru’s post-election tenure that began after India’s first general elections in 1952. While former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi served longer overall, her tenure was not continuous, making Modi the longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister in the country’s history.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP office in Sri Vijaya Puram, party leaders said the achievement reflects more than two decades of leadership in executive office, including nearly 13 years as Chief Minister of Gujarat and 12 years as Prime Minister.
The press conference was attended by BJP Vice President Mohan Halder, State Spokesperson Jijit Rekh and other senior party leaders.
Speaking to the media, Rekh described Modi’s political journey as one marked by strong leadership and clean governance. He claimed that despite repeated allegations by political opponents and criticism from various quarters, the Prime Minister has maintained an unblemished public image throughout his years in public office.
The BJP leaders informed that programmes are being organized nationwide between June 5 and June 21 to highlight the achievements of the Modi-led government and celebrate the completion of 12 years of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) rule at the Centre.
During the briefing, party leaders highlighted several flagship initiatives and infrastructure projects undertaken over the past decade. These included the expansion of highways, tunnels, expressways, digital payment systems, welfare schemes and poverty alleviation programmes.
At the national level, the Modi government’s tenure has been associated with several major projects, including the new Parliament building, Central Vista redevelopment, Kartavya Path, Vande Bharat train services, the Statue of Unity, INS Vikrant, the Kashmir rail link, Noida International Airport, Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System and the Ganga Expressway.
BJP leaders also pointed to the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, citing the nationwide vaccination programme and continued implementation of free ration support for economically weaker sections.
On national security, the party highlighted measures aimed at strengthening India’s defence capabilities and cited major policy decisions such as the abrogation of Article 370, women’s reservation initiatives and efforts towards the proposed “One Nation, One Election” framework.
The leaders further stated that India has emerged as a stronger global player under Modi’s leadership and pointed to the rapid growth of digital transactions across urban and rural areas alike.
Highlighting local development, BJP leaders said several long-pending projects in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands gained momentum after 2014. They cited the development of the new terminal building at Veer Savarkar International Airport and other infrastructure initiatives as examples of the Centre’s focus on the islands.
Environmental campaigns, including the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” plantation initiative, were also highlighted during the press conference. Party leaders said BJP workers have participated in large-scale plantation drives across the country.
The leaders additionally linked the celebrations with the upcoming International Day of Yoga, crediting Modi with helping bring international recognition to yoga through sustained diplomatic efforts.
As part of the June 10 celebrations, BJP leaders said special prayers would be offered in temples across the islands for the Prime Minister’s good health and long life. Similar programmes are expected to be held in all districts under the leadership of local party functionaries.
Meanwhile, the NDA convened a meeting at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on Wednesday to mark both the completion of 12 years of NDA governance and Modi’s record-breaking tenure. Senior BJP leaders, Union ministers, chief ministers and alliance partners were expected to participate in the event.
The BJP expressed confidence that Modi’s vision of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047 would continue to guide the country’s future development trajectory.
