Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 4: The Andaman and Nicobar Administration has sanctioned the construction of a motorable steel bridge at Tugapur No. 7 in Mayabunder at an estimated cost of ₹5,91,78,968, addressing a long-pending demand for improved road connectivity in the area. The project, planned near the residence of Amulya Bepari, is expected to strengthen transport links for residents of Tugapur and adjoining villages while improving access through the rural road network. The Administration has fixed a completion period of 12 months.
The approval follows sustained demands from local residents and Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) representatives, who had sought a permanent solution to connectivity challenges in the locality. A proposal for constructing a footbridge at the site had initially been under consideration before the demand shifted towards a motorable bridge to meet local transportation needs.
The requirement for a steel bridge was discussed during a community meeting held at Tugapur No. 7 on May 14, 2025. The meeting was attended by the Member of Parliament from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, PRI representatives and officials of the Andaman Public Works Department (APWD), who reviewed the area’s connectivity issues and the difficulties faced by residents in daily movement.
Following the discussions, public representatives sought approval for a motorable steel bridge, citing the needs of the local population. The proposal was subsequently pursued with the Andaman and Nicobar Administration, which has now accorded administrative sanction for the project.
The sanctioned work includes the construction of approach roads, manufacturing, supply and installation of steel bridge components, along with associated civil and structural works required to make the bridge fully operational.
Once completed, the bridge is expected to improve vehicular movement between Tugapur and neighbouring areas, providing better road access and strengthening connectivity in the Mayabunder region. The project represents a significant infrastructure initiative aimed at addressing the area’s long-standing connectivity requirements through a permanent motorable crossing.
