Samrat Choudhary Takes Oath as Bihar CM; Nitish Kumar Backs Leadership, Signals New Political Phase with BJP-led Government in the State

Date:

Bihar, April 15: A major political transition unfolded in Bihar on Wednesday as Samrat Choudhary was sworn in as the 24th Chief Minister, marking the first time a leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party has assumed the top post in the state.

The development comes a day after former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar resigned from office, bringing an end to a long political tenure that significantly shaped Bihar’s governance landscape over nearly two decades.

Soon after the swearing-in, Nitish Kumar extended his congratulations to the new Chief Minister, expressing confidence in his leadership. “Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to Samrat Chaudhary on taking the oath today as the new Chief Minister of Bihar. I am confident that under your leadership, Bihar will develop even more rapidly,” he said in a message posted on social media.

The new government also saw the induction of senior leaders from the Janata Dal (United), with Vijay Kumar Chaudhary and Vijendra Prasad Yadav taking oath as Deputy Chief Ministers, indicating continuity in alliance dynamics despite the leadership shift.

The change in guard signals the beginning of a new political phase in Bihar, with heightened expectations from the BJP-led administration to accelerate development and governance reforms in the state.

Nitish Kumar, in a detailed message following his resignation, reflected on his tenure and the state’s development journey. He recalled that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government was first formed in Bihar in November 2005, marking the start of a governance-focused era.

He highlighted that his administration worked across sectors including education, healthcare, infrastructure, electricity, and agriculture, while also prioritising welfare initiatives for women and youth. According to him, the focus remained on inclusive development, cutting across caste, class, and religious lines.

The outgoing Chief Minister also pointed to recent policy initiatives such as the ‘7 Nishchay-3’ programme, a roadmap for the 2025–2030 period aimed at further accelerating Bihar’s growth trajectory. The programme, he noted, was designed to address emerging development challenges while building on past achievements.

Acknowledging the Centre’s role, Nitish Kumar thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for continued support, stating that cooperation between the state and the Centre has played a crucial role in Bihar’s progress.

He expressed optimism that Bihar would soon emerge among the country’s leading states and contribute significantly to India’s overall development.

Kumar also clarified that his decision to step down was deliberate, signalling a transition rather than a political rupture. He assured full support and guidance to the new government, underlining the importance of continuity in governance.

The leadership change comes at a time when Bihar faces key developmental challenges, including employment generation, infrastructure expansion, and social sector improvements. Observers note that the new administration will be closely watched for its ability to balance political expectations with governance delivery.

With Samrat Choudhary at the helm, the BJP now leads the state government, marking a significant shift in Bihar’s political dynamics. The transition is expected to reshape policy priorities and administrative strategies in the coming months.

As the new government takes charge, the focus will remain on sustaining growth momentum, implementing ongoing schemes, and addressing emerging socio-economic needs. The coming period is likely to test the new leadership’s ability to deliver on expectations while navigating the complexities of coalition governance.

The swearing-in ceremony thus marks not just a routine political change, but a pivotal moment in Bihar’s evolving political narrative, setting the stage for a new chapter in the state’s development journey.
