Education Ministry Orders Probe Into NEET-UG Leak Row, Seeks Contractor Report

Date:

New Delhi, June 2: The Union Ministry of Education has initiated administrative action in connection with the controversy surrounding the alleged NEET-UG entrance examination paper leak, ordering a detailed inquiry into the processes linked to examination management and security infrastructure.

As part of the investigation, the ministry has sought a comprehensive report on the awarding of an operational contract to a private firm, COEMPT, amid concerns over examination security and alleged data vulnerabilities. The move marks one of the first major administrative steps taken by the government as it intensifies efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding the controversy.

According to senior ministry sources, authorities are examining the firm’s technical qualifications, eligibility criteria and performance history to assess how it was entrusted with responsibilities related to the examination framework. The review is expected to form a key component of the broader inquiry into the alleged breach.

The development comes as the government continues to face scrutiny over the integrity of one of the country’s most important competitive examinations. Officials have indicated that the investigation is being treated as a matter of high priority, with a focus on identifying any lapses in administrative procedures and accountability mechanisms.

Sources said the ministry has conveyed a clear message that strict action will be taken against any officials, institutions or external entities found responsible for negligence, procedural failures or involvement in any irregularities connected to the examination process.

The inquiry is being conducted alongside ongoing efforts involving cybersecurity agencies and examination authorities tasked with assessing the extent of the alleged security vulnerabilities. Investigators are working to establish whether weaknesses existed within the operational systems responsible for handling examination-related data and logistics.

The government has simultaneously moved to strengthen the examination security framework. Authorities have already transferred the primary investigation into the matter to central agencies as part of a wider effort to ensure an independent and comprehensive probe.

In addition, a high-level committee comprising technical experts has been constituted to recommend reforms aimed at enhancing examination security across the country. The panel has been tasked with reviewing existing systems and proposing safeguards designed to prevent future breaches.

Among the measures under consideration are stronger biometric verification procedures at examination centres, enhanced digital security architecture and advanced encryption mechanisms for the transmission of examination papers. These steps are intended to improve the protection of sensitive examination materials and reduce the risk of unauthorised access.

The government has also implemented logistical safeguards, including the transportation of examination papers through Indian Air Force aircraft, as part of efforts to secure the movement of confidential documents.

Officials said the findings of the ongoing investigation would play a significant role in shaping future examination protocols. The ministry has indicated that the outcome of the probe could lead to substantial changes in examination management systems, with an emphasis on transparency, accountability and stricter safeguards against malpractice.

The latest action reflects the government’s attempt to restore confidence in the examination process while addressing concerns raised by students, parents and educational stakeholders over the alleged NEET-UG paper leak controversy.
