New Delhi, June 2: A fresh political confrontation unfolded on Tuesday as the Congress extended support to West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee over her planned protest against alleged attacks on party leaders and workers, while the Bharatiya Janata Party dismissed the agitation as politically ineffective.
The dispute centres on allegations raised by the Trinamool Congress regarding attacks on its leaders and workers, as well as concerns linked to the eviction of hawkers from railway land. The issue has triggered sharp exchanges between opposition parties and the BJP, adding to the ongoing political tensions in West Bengal.
Speaking on the matter, Pramod Tiwari said the Constitution provides every citizen and political organisation the right to hold peaceful demonstrations against perceived injustice. He described Banerjee’s protest as a legitimate democratic exercise and defended her decision to stage a sit-in demonstration.

Tiwari also referred to alleged attacks on senior Trinamool Congress leaders, including Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee. He claimed that incidents involving party leaders and attacks on Trinamool Congress offices reflected a broader pattern of political confrontation. The Congress leader further alleged that such developments represented an aggressive approach by the BJP and called on opposition parties to unite in protest against what he described as political intimidation.
The BJP, however, strongly rejected the allegations and questioned the relevance of the proposed protest. Responding to the Congress position, Praveen Khandelwal said the Trinamool Congress leadership was attempting to divert attention from public dissatisfaction in West Bengal. He argued that the planned agitation would not influence public opinion and claimed that voters were seeking accountability from the ruling party in the state.
Adding to the criticism, BJP leader Locket Chatterjee said political circumstances in West Bengal had changed significantly in recent months. She alleged that public resentment against the Trinamool Congress had increased and claimed the party was facing organisational challenges following its electoral setback.
The exchange of allegations reflects the continuing political rivalry between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP, a contest that has frequently produced confrontational campaigns, public demonstrations and accusations from both sides.
The controversy has also drawn attention because it involves claims relating to political violence and actions against hawkers occupying railway land, issues that carry implications for governance, public order and political accountability.
As political parties continue to trade accusations, the protest announced by Mamata Banerjee is expected to remain a focal point in the ongoing debate over political violence, opposition rights and public dissent in West Bengal. Both the Congress and the BJP have used the issue to reinforce competing narratives about governance and democratic rights, ensuring that the matter remains firmly in the national political spotlight.
