Netaji Stadium Swimming Pool to Reopen from June 14 After Water Supply Improves

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, June 13: The swimming pool at the Netaji Stadium Sports Complex in Sri Vijaya Puram, which had been temporarily closed due to acute water shortage during the peak summer season, will reopen for regular use from June 14, 2026.

An official communication issued by the authorities confirmed that the facility will once again be accessible to both members and non-members in accordance with prescribed timings and operational guidelines. The reopening marks the restoration of one of the most frequently used sports facilities in the capital city after nearly a month of suspension.

The swimming pool had been closed on May 8, 2026, after the prevailing summer heat led to a significant decline in water availability across the Islands. At that time, officials had stated that the shortage had severely impacted the maintenance and filtration processes essential for ensuring hygienic and safe swimming conditions.

Sports authorities had explained that continuous and adequate water supply is critical for maintaining pool hygiene standards, including proper filtration, circulation and regular water treatment. With reduced supply levels, it had become increasingly difficult to maintain operational safety norms, prompting the temporary suspension of services.

The closure applied to all categories of users, including registered members, trainees, recreational swimmers, school students and non-members. Authorities had indicated then that the pool would remain closed until water conditions improved, without specifying a reopening date.

During the closure period, priority was given to essential water usage across public utilities and residential requirements, as part of broader conservation efforts implemented across the Islands during the summer season.

Officials noted that summer months in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands typically place additional stress on available water resources due to increased consumption and reduced replenishment. In this context, temporary restrictions on non-essential water usage, including sports facilities, were considered necessary to ensure equitable distribution.

The Netaji Stadium swimming pool is a key sports infrastructure facility in Sri Vijaya Puram and is regularly used by swimmers of all age groups, including school children, competitive trainees, athletes and fitness enthusiasts. The suspension of its operations had affected routine training schedules and recreational activities for many users.

Following the improvement in water availability and restoration of required operational conditions, due to monsoon rain the administration has now decided to resume services.

Authorities have assured that all necessary safety and hygiene protocols will continue to be strictly followed to ensure a clean and secure environment for swimmers. Regular monitoring of water quality will also be maintained as part of operational guidelines.

The administration has urged users to adhere to all prescribed rules and timings once the facility reopens. Officials also appealed for continued cooperation in water conservation efforts, noting that responsible usage remains important even as conditions improve.

The reopening has been welcomed by regular users and sports trainees who had been awaiting the resumption of swimming activities. Many had expressed that the facility plays an important role in physical fitness, training programmes and recreational sports in the region.

With the swimming pool set to resume operations on June 14, the Netaji Stadium Sports Complex is expected to return to its full range of sporting activities, strengthening sports engagement across Sri Vijaya Puram.
