North & Middle Andaman, June 13: Shri TSG Bhasker, Chairman of the Campaign Committee of the Andaman & Nicobar Pradesh Congress Committee (ANTCC), undertook a three-day visit to several flood-affected areas across North and Middle Andaman to assess the damage caused by recent heavy rainfall and flooding.
The visit covered a wide stretch from Kadamtala to Mayabunder, where multiple villages and settlements reported inundation, damaged households and disruption to daily life due to continuous rains. Bhasker interacted with affected families and local residents, listening to their grievances and reviewing the on-ground situation in the impacted regions.
During his visit, Bhasker met families residing in flood-hit areas and inspected households that had been affected by waterlogging and inundation. Residents shared accounts of hardship, including damage to property, disruption of essential services and challenges in accessing relief support during the peak of flooding.
The ANTCC leader assured the affected communities that the Congress party stands in solidarity with them during this difficult period. He stated that their concerns would be taken up with the appropriate authorities to ensure timely intervention and support.
As part of the visit, Bhasker also held discussions with the Assistant Commissioner of Rangat, focusing on immediate relief measures and rehabilitation efforts for affected families. He emphasised the need for swift action to ensure that assistance reaches those impacted without delay.
He further stressed the importance of ensuring adequate compensation and support for all eligible households that have suffered losses due to flooding. According to him, timely relief is essential to restore normalcy and help families recover from the damage caused by extreme weather conditions.
Expressing concern over the recurring nature of heavy rainfall-related flooding in the region, Bhasker called for a comprehensive long-term strategy to address the issue. He highlighted the need for strengthening drainage systems, improving natural water flow channels and adopting sustainable infrastructure planning to reduce the impact of future flood events.
He noted that repeated flooding incidents not only affect housing and livelihoods but also disrupt connectivity, education and access to essential services in remote settlements across North and Middle Andaman.
The visit also included interactions with Panchayati Raj Institution (PRI) members and community leaders, who apprised him of local challenges and infrastructure vulnerabilities. Residents reportedly raised concerns regarding drainage capacity, road conditions and the need for better preparedness mechanisms during monsoon seasons.
Bhasker reviewed several affected locations along the Kadamtala–Mayabunder route, observing the extent of waterlogging and damage in low-lying areas. He reiterated the need for coordinated efforts between local administration and elected representatives to address both immediate relief requirements and long-term risk reduction strategies.
He further urged the administration to prioritise preventive planning and infrastructure upgrades to minimise the impact of extreme weather events, which have become increasingly frequent in recent years. He said that sustainable flood management measures are essential to protect lives, property and livelihoods in vulnerable regions.
The three-day tour concluded with renewed calls for enhanced disaster preparedness and improved response systems to support affected communities. Bhasker reiterated that continued engagement with local stakeholders would remain crucial in ensuring that the concerns of flood-affected residents are addressed effectively.
Authorities are yet to issue a detailed consolidated damage assessment, while relief and rehabilitation efforts are expected to continue in the affected areas in the coming days.
