Sri Vijaya Puram, May 8: The swimming pool at the Netaji Stadium Sports Complex will remain closed for all users, including members and non-members, from May 8, 2026 due to an acute shortage of water during the ongoing summer season.
The prevailing water scarcity has significantly affected the maintenance and filtration process required for operating the swimming pool safely and hygienically.
Officials explained that a continuous and adequate supply of water is essential to maintain water quality standards and ensure the proper functioning of filtration and circulation systems in the pool. However, due to the current shortage, maintaining the required water levels and ensuring regular treatment of pool water has become increasingly difficult.

The decision to suspend swimming pool operations was taken after assessing the impact of the summer water crisis and the practical difficulties in continuing normal maintenance activities under the prevailing conditions.
The closure will apply to all categories of users, including registered members, trainees, recreational swimmers and non-members visiting the facility. Authorities have not specified a reopening date and indicated that the swimming pool will remain closed until the water supply situation improves.
The decision was necessary in the interest of public hygiene, safety and responsible water management. They added that maintaining a swimming pool without sufficient water resources could compromise sanitation standards and create health-related concerns for users.
The summer season in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands often witnesses increased pressure on available water resources, with higher consumption levels and reduced water availability affecting both public facilities and residential areas.
Sports authorities stated that under such circumstances, priority is being given to essential water requirements while non-essential usage is being temporarily restricted to conserve available supplies.
The Netaji Stadium Sports Complex is among the most frequently used sports facilities in Sri Vijaya Puram and regularly hosts swimming practice sessions, recreational activities and sports training programmes. The swimming pool is used by a large number of school students, trainees, athletes and fitness enthusiasts throughout the year.
Regular users of the facility expressed disappointment over the temporary closure but acknowledged the necessity of the decision considering the ongoing water shortage situation.
Sports officials also appealed to the public to cooperate with water conservation efforts during the summer months and use water responsibly in view of the prevailing shortage.
The administration has been taking various measures across the Islands to manage water resources efficiently during the peak summer period, particularly in urban areas where demand for water rises substantially.
Meanwhile, users have been advised to stay updated through official announcements regarding the reopening of the swimming pool and resumption of regular operations at the sports complex.
Officials expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to swimmers, trainees and sports enthusiasts due to the closure and assured that the facility would resume services as soon as conditions permit.
