Guwahati, May 12: Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday took oath as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term as the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) formed the government in the state for the third straight time.
The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Lakshman Prasad Acharya during a grand swearing-in ceremony held at Khanapara in Guwahati.
The ceremony witnessed the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman along with several senior BJP and NDA leaders.
Chief Ministers from 22 NDA-ruled states also attended the event, highlighting the political significance of the BJP’s continued success in Assam and the broader northeastern region.
Along with Sarma, five ministers were sworn into the new Council of Ministers.
Those inducted into the Cabinet included former Union Minister Rameswar Teli, Atul Bora of the Asom Gana Parishad, Charan Boro of the United People’s Party Liberal and senior BJP leader Ajanta Neog.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by thousands of BJP supporters and NDA workers who gathered at the venue waving party flags and cheering as Sarma took oath in traditional Assamese attire.
The event also saw the participation of several industrialists, social leaders and distinguished personalities from different sectors.
A notable feature of the ceremony was the presence of 15 Satradhikars representing Assam’s Vaishnavite monasteries, reflecting the cultural and religious significance attached to the occasion.
Political observers described the ceremony as a major demonstration of the BJP’s growing political dominance in the northeastern region.
The BJP-led NDA secured a decisive victory in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections, paving the way for Sarma’s return to power for a second consecutive term.
Sarma first became Chief Minister in 2021 after the BJP retained power in the state under the NDA alliance.
Over the past few years, he has emerged as one of the BJP’s most influential leaders in the Northeast and has played a significant role in expanding the party’s political base across the region.
Before staking claim to form the government, Sarma was unanimously elected leader of both the BJP Legislature Party and the NDA Legislature Party in Assam.
Following the election of the legislature party leader, Sarma met Governor Acharya and formally submitted his claim to form the government.
The BJP’s latest electoral victory in Assam is being viewed as politically significant as it marks the third consecutive term for the NDA alliance in the state, further consolidating the party’s position in a region once considered politically challenging for the BJP.
During the election campaign, the BJP focused heavily on infrastructure development, welfare schemes, economic growth, connectivity projects and regional identity issues.
Party leaders credited Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and Sarma’s governance style for the alliance’s strong electoral performance.
Meanwhile, Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said Assam would continue its development journey under Sarma’s leadership and the new NDA government.
Speaking to reporters after arriving in Guwahati for the swearing-in ceremony, Scindia said Prime Minister Modi’s vision of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas” had transformed Assam and the northeastern states over the last twelve years.
“Today, for the third time, the blessings of the people are with the Bharatiya Janata Party and with the Prime Minister,” Scindia stated.
He added that Assam would continue moving ahead on the same path of development and progress under the leadership of Sarma.
Scindia also congratulated the newly sworn-in Chief Minister and members of the Cabinet and extended his greetings to the people of Assam.
Senior BJP leaders present at the event described the NDA’s victory in Assam as an endorsement of the alliance’s development agenda and governance model in the Northeast.
Political analysts believe Sarma’s second term is likely to focus on further infrastructure expansion, industrial investment, connectivity projects, welfare implementation and strengthening Assam’s role as a gateway to the Northeast.
The BJP leadership has repeatedly highlighted the Northeast as a major priority region under the Centre’s development agenda.
The grand swearing-in ceremony concluded amid celebrations by party workers and supporters across Assam, with BJP leaders expressing confidence that the new government would continue the state’s development trajectory in the coming years.
