Israel Heads to Polls Amid Uncertainty Over Coalition Majority and Netanyahu’s Future

Date:

New Delhi/Jerusalem, Oct. 26: Israel’s parliamentary election will test whether any political bloc can secure a workable governing majority, with 7.3 million eligible voters choosing representatives for the 120-seat Knesset amid public concerns over national security and the prospect of peace after three years of war.

The election is scheduled for October 27. Michelle Sirota, spokesperson for the Embassy of Israel in India, told IANS that the vote would determine which parties enter parliament and whether they join the governing coalition or sit in opposition. She expressed hope for a high turnout, describing public engagement with the country’s future as a defining feature of its democratic process.

Under Israel’s electoral system, voters choose a political party, and the number of seats it wins determines how many representatives it can send to parliament. The distribution of seats will shape the negotiations required to establish the next government.

Sirota said the President would decide which party receives the first opportunity to form a coalition after the votes are counted. That party would have 28 days to secure support from other parties. If it fails, the largest remaining party would receive the opportunity. Should both efforts fail, Israel could return to the polls within 90 days, she said.

The possibility of a prolonged government-formation process remains significant, with opinion polls showing no clear majority for either side. Senior Israeli journalist Yaron Decel told IANS that the outcome could lead to another election, a national unity government or a minority government backed by the opposition to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

A minority administration would not command 61 seats in the 120-member parliament but could still seek sufficient support to begin governing, Decel said. He added that opposition parties wanted to replace the current government, leaving coalition negotiations central to the election’s aftermath.

Beyond the parliamentary arithmetic, voters have raised concerns about the country’s security and future after years of conflict. One Israeli citizen told IANS that national unity would remain essential regardless of which government emerges, arguing that the country’s challenges require people to stay together.

Another voter identified national security as the principal concern, saying that after three years of war, people wanted peace.

The election’s outcome will therefore determine not only the composition of parliament but also the political negotiations that follow, as parties seek the support needed to govern amid uncertainty over the balance of power and public demands for security and stability.
