Sri Vijaya Puram, May 11: An awareness-cum-interaction programme under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan was conducted at the District Prison on Friday to create awareness among inmates about the harmful effects of substance abuse and the importance of rehabilitation and recovery.
The programme was organised under the National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) in collaboration with the Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts (IRCA), Prison Department and the Unique Disability ID (UDID) Scheme.
Officials stated that the initiative aimed to sensitize inmates about the dangers associated with drug and alcohol abuse while promoting self-reformation, recovery and social reintegration.
During the programme, the Nodal Officer of NAPDDR briefed the inmates about the objectives and activities being carried out under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan for prevention of substance abuse and promotion of a drug-free society.
The officer highlighted the need for collective efforts in addressing addiction-related issues and encouraged inmates to adopt healthy and responsible lifestyles.
A Medical Officer from IRCA conducted an interactive session focusing on the rehabilitation process for individuals affected by substance abuse.
The session covered de-addiction treatment, counselling services, relapse prevention measures and recovery support systems available for persons struggling with addiction.
Officials stated that inmates were also sensitised about the psychological, physical and social consequences of prolonged substance abuse and the importance of seeking timely treatment and support.
The Jailor of District Prison also addressed the inmates during the programme and motivated them to lead disciplined and positive lives. He emphasised the importance of self-reformation, rehabilitation and successful reintegration into society after release from prison.
The Jailor encouraged inmates to stay away from drugs and alcohol and focus on building a responsible future for themselves and their families.
As part of the programme, the State Coordinator of the Unique Disability ID Scheme (UDID) informed inmates and prison officials about the benefits of the UDID Card and explained the application process for availing disability-related welfare schemes and government services.
Officials stated that the awareness session also aimed to improve access to rehabilitation and welfare support for eligible beneficiaries.
Earlier, the Deputy Jailor highlighted the importance of organising awareness initiatives inside correctional institutions to promote behavioural change, social responsibility and rehabilitation among inmates.
The programme concluded with all participants taking a collective pledge of “Say No to Drugs, Say Yes to Life.”
Organisers appealed to inmates to actively contribute towards building a healthier, safer and drug-free society by avoiding substance abuse and supporting positive social change.
Officials stated that such programmes form part of ongoing efforts to spread awareness about drug abuse prevention and encourage rehabilitation-focused approaches within correctional institutions and communities.
The Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan continues to conduct awareness campaigns, counselling sessions and rehabilitation initiatives across the country to reduce substance abuse and promote healthier lifestyles among vulnerable groups and youth.
