First Phase of Competency-Based Learning Training for Teachers Concludes in Sri Vijaya Puram

DIET and the State Institute of Education concluded the first phase of a five-day Capacity Building Training Programme on competency-based experiential learning for teachers in Sri Vijaya Puram. More than 440 teachers from nine educational zones participated in the programme, which featured sessions by experts from NCERT, RIE and CBSE. The training focused on innovative teaching methods, experiential learning and classroom engagement strategies aimed at improving educational quality and teaching practices in schools across the Islands.

Sri Vijaya Puram, May 11: Dr. S. Radhakrishnan District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) and the State Institute of Education (SIE) successfully concluded the first phase of a five-day Capacity Building Training Programme on “Competency-Based Experiential Learning” for teachers of the Andaman and Nicobar Administration on May 8, 2026.

The training programme was organised for Primary School Teachers (PSTs), Graduate Trained Teachers (GTTs) and Post Graduate Teachers (PGTs) and was conducted at multiple venues across Sri Vijaya Puram.

Officials stated that the programme aimed at strengthening competency based and experiential teaching practices among school teachers and enhancing classroom learning methodologies.

According to the organisers, a total of 205 Primary School Teachers and 236 Graduate Trained Teachers and Post Graduate Teachers from all nine educational zones of the Islands participated in the first phase of the training programme.

The closing ceremony of the programme was attended by Smti. Sangeeta Chand, Principal of SIE, who attended the event as the chief guest.

Addressing the participants, Sangeeta Chand appreciated the efforts of DIET and SIE in organising an intensive and meaningful training programme designed to improve competency-based teaching practices and experiential learning approaches in schools.

She highlighted the importance of innovative and activity based teaching methods in improving student participation, conceptual understanding and overall classroom engagement.

Officials stated that the programme included a series of academic and interactive sessions conducted by eminent resource persons and education experts from leading national institutions.

Experts from the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), Regional Institute of Education Bhubaneswar, Regional Institute of Education Nellore, Regional Institute of Education Mysore and Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducted technical sessions during the programme.

The sessions focused on competency-based education, experiential learning methodologies, classroom engagement strategies and innovative pedagogical techniques.

Resource persons also demonstrated practical approaches to classroom teaching and encouraged teachers to adopt student centric learning methods to improve educational outcomes.

Interactive sessions, group discussions and practical demonstrations formed an important part of the programme and enabled teachers to actively participate and exchange ideas and experiences.

Participants expressed appreciation for the academic sessions and practical activities conducted during the training programme.

Teachers stated that the programme helped enhance their professional competencies and provided useful insights into modern teaching methodologies and classroom practices.

Officials said the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts by the Education Department to strengthen the quality of school education in the Islands through continuous professional development and capacity-building of teachers.

The organisers further stated that competency-based experiential learning plays an important role in promoting critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving abilities and conceptual understanding among students.

The Education Department has been conducting various teacher training and capacity-building programmes to align classroom teaching practices with the objectives of the National Education Policy and evolving educational standards.

Officials added that additional phases of the programme are expected to be organised for teachers in the coming months to ensure wider participation and implementation of competency-based learning approaches across schools in the Islands.
