Sri Vijaya Puram, May 11: The Department of Art and Culture, Andaman and Nicobar Administration, organised a special programme at the Andaman Club last Friday to commemorate the 165th Birth Anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.
The event witnessed participation from officials, artistes, students and members of the public and featured a series of cultural performances, speeches and tributes honouring Tagore’s immense literary, artistic and philosophical contributions to Indian society.
The programme commenced with floral tributes being paid to the portrait of Rabindranath Tagore by the Director of Art and Culture, Smt. Priyanka Kumari, who attended the event as the chief guest. Other dignitaries and attendees also offered floral tributes during the ceremony.

Addressing the gathering, Priyanka Kumari said that Rabindra Jayanti marks the birth anniversary of Nobel Laureate poet, writer and philosopher Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, whose works have had a profound influence on Bengali literature, music and Indian culture.
She highlighted Tagore’s contribution to the Indian freedom movement and his enduring relevance in contemporary society.
The Director urged younger generations to draw inspiration from Tagore’s writings, philosophy and ideals, stating that his works continue to promote humanity, creativity, patriotism and social harmony.
Smti Kalyani Halder, PGT of GSSS Diglipur, also spoke during the programme and shared insights into the life, teachings and literary contributions of Rabindranath Tagore.
She described Tagore as one of India’s greatest cultural icons whose writings and thoughts transcended regional and national boundaries.
Kalyani Halder also recited a poem dedicated to Tagore as part of the tribute programme.
Earlier, Assistant Director of Art and Culture, Ms Kanak Radha Chatterjee, welcomed the gathering and highlighted the significance of observing Rabindra Jayanti to preserve and celebrate India’s literary and cultural heritage.
The programme also featured a variety of cultural performances presented by local artistes and cultural groups.
Artistes of Sur Saptak Sangeet Akademy, Jhumur Nrityangana and Sujata Dance Akademy presented Rabindra Sangeet and dance performances based on Tagore’s compositions and literary works.
The performances received appreciation from the audience and added cultural vibrancy to the occasion.
Officials stated that the programme was organised to honour Tagore’s timeless legacy and promote awareness about his literary, musical and philosophical contributions among younger generations in the Islands.
Rabindranath Tagore remains one of the most influential figures in Indian literature and culture and became the first Asian to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 for his celebrated work Gitanjali.
His songs, poems, essays and educational philosophy continue to inspire generations across India and beyond.
The Department of Art and Culture stated that such programmes play an important role in preserving cultural traditions and encouraging appreciation for India’s literary heritage.
