Sri Vijaya Puram, July 17: A 53-year-old woman sustained multiple fractures after a speeding motorcycle allegedly hit her during her morning walk near Jalsa Hall in Dollygunj on Friday, highlighting continuing concerns over rash riding and pedestrian safety on city roads.
The accident occurred at around 5 a.m. near the statue close to Jalsa Hall when a motorcycle bearing registration number AN01K 6696 was travelling from Dollygunj Junction towards Minnie Bay.
According to sources, the motorcycle was being ridden by T. Kannai, a 20-year-old private worker and resident of Garacharma. Preliminary investigation indicated that the rider was allegedly travelling at a high speed as he was running late for work.
Sources said the rider allegedly attempted to overtake another motorcycle but lost control of the vehicle during the manoeuvre. The motorcycle reportedly struck the pedestrian before crashing into a roadside safety barricade.
The injured woman, identified as S. Prabha, a 53-year-old resident of Dollygunj, sustained fractures to her left leg and left hand in the collision.
Residents in the area immediately rushed to assist the injured woman and informed her family members. An ambulance and a Police Control Room (PCR) vehicle reached the scene shortly afterwards.
Both the injured pedestrian and the motorcycle rider were shifted to G.B. Pant Hospital for medical treatment.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the risks faced by pedestrians during early morning hours, particularly on roads where overspeeding and unsafe overtaking continue to pose a threat to public safety.
Police have initiated the necessary legal process in connection with the accident. Further legal action will be taken.
