Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug. 19: The Deputy Education Office, Wimberlygunj, will organise an Inter-School Table Tennis and Badminton Tournament for students in the Under-14 and Under-17 categories as part of the National Sports Day 2026 celebrations.
The tournaments will be held from August 19 to August 25, 2026, at the Multipurpose Hall, Kanyapuram, and will be open to boys and girls from schools under the Wimberlygunj Educational Zone.
The sporting events are being organised in connection with the celebration of National Sports Day, which is observed on August 29 every year on the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.
The inter-school competitions will provide students from the Wimberlygunj Educational Zone an opportunity to participate in organised sporting events in two disciplines, table tennis and badminton.
Both boys and girls in the Under-14 and Under-17 age categories will be eligible to participate in the tournaments.
The events are scheduled to continue for seven days, from August 19 to August 25, with matches being conducted at the Multipurpose Hall in Kanyapuram.
The initiative forms part of the wider sporting activities being organised in the Islands around National Sports Day 2026, with different departments and educational zones conducting events to encourage participation among students and promote sporting activities.
School-level tournaments play an important role in providing young students with opportunities to compete in organised events and represent their respective schools.
The Wimberlygunj tournaments will focus specifically on table tennis and badminton, bringing together students from participating schools within the educational zone across the two age groups.
The available information does not specify the number of participating schools or students, the format of the competition, individual match schedules or the prize structure for the tournaments.
However, the events are scheduled to be held over the August 19–25 period, allowing competitions to be conducted as part of the National Sports Day celebrations.
The inclusion of both Under-14 and Under-17 categories ensures participation from students across different school age groups, while separate participation for boys and girls will allow young athletes from across the Wimberlygunj Educational Zone to compete in their respective categories.
The tournament venue at Kanyapuram will serve as the centre for the week-long sporting activities.
The initiative is among the events being organised to mark National Sports Day 2026 and promote sports participation among students.
National Sports Day celebrations across the country commemorate the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, with sporting events and activities organised to encourage participation and recognise the importance of sports.
For students in the Wimberlygunj Educational Zone, the upcoming tournaments will provide an opportunity to participate in inter-school competition in table tennis and badminton during the week leading up to the main National Sports Day celebrations.
