Sri Vijaya Puram, June 11: The South Andaman Zilla Parishad has constituted its Standing Committees for the financial year 2026-27, assigning elected members to oversee key areas including finance, development, water supply, education and public health.
The committees were formally constituted on June 10, with the Adhyaksh of the South Andaman Zilla Parishad appointing chairpersons and members from among the elected Zilla Parishad members.
According to an official release, the move is aimed at streamlining governance and ensuring focused discussion and decision-making on developmental, welfare and administrative issues falling within the jurisdiction of the Zilla Parishad.
Five standing committees have been constituted for the year.
The Finance, Taxation and Accounts Committee will be chaired by V.K. Mariyam Bibi. Other members of the committee include A. Ummer, M. Rajani, Vasudevan Nair and Dasarath Verma.
The Works and Development Committee will be headed by P.A. Sharfuddin. The committee comprises S. Boominathan, Abdul Bashir, V.K. Abdul Aziz and Vasudevan Nair as members.
The Water Supply and Works Committee will be chaired by Abdul Bashir. Its members include Leela Bathi, Pramila Kumari, Sanjay Kumar Singh and Dasarath Verma.
The Education and Social Justice Committee will function under the chairmanship of Prakash Adhikari. The committee members are Abdul Bashir, Pramila Kumari, Sarika Devi and Dhana Rekha.
Meanwhile, the Public Health and Sanitation Committee will be chaired by M. Rajani. The committee includes A. Ummer, Pramila Kumari, Dhana Rekha and Prakash Adhikari as members.
The standing committees play an important role in the functioning of the Panchayati Raj system by examining sector-specific issues and making recommendations to the Zilla Parishad. They also monitor implementation of development programmes and assist in policy decisions relating to their respective subjects.
Officials said the newly constituted committees are expected to facilitate more effective planning and execution of projects while ensuring greater accountability and focused attention on priority sectors.
The formation of the committees marks the beginning of the Zilla Parishad’s institutional framework for the 2026-27 term and is expected to support the administration in addressing local developmental needs across South Andaman.
