ChatGPT Goes Down Worldwide, OpenAI Works to Restore Services

Date:

New Delhi, July 25: A widespread technical disruption affected OpenAI’s ChatGPT services on Saturday, leaving thousands of users across multiple countries unable to access the artificial intelligence chatbot, submit prompts or retrieve previous conversations. The outage impacted both free and paid users, prompting OpenAI to acknowledge the issue and initiate recovery measures.

By around 3 pm, outage monitoring platform Downdetector had recorded 1,535 user reports, signalling a significant disruption to ChatGPT services. According to the platform, nearly 80 per cent of the complaints related to the ChatGPT service itself, while 8 per cent involved the mobile application and another 8 per cent concerned API-related issues.

The disruption was reported by users in the United States, Europe, India, Japan, Australia and several other countries. Reports began increasing less than an hour after the outage started, indicating a broad impact across multiple regions.

Users encountered a range of technical problems while attempting to use the service. Many reported that they could not log in to their accounts, submit prompts or access their chat history. Others experienced unexpected sign-outs, authentication failures and service unavailable messages when attempting to interact with the chatbot.

Several users also said conversations failed to load, preventing access to ongoing or previous chats. Others reported being stuck on loading screens while using either the ChatGPT website or the mobile application. Many turned to social media platform X to highlight the problems and share their experiences during the disruption.

OpenAI confirmed the outage through its official status page, stating that it was investigating the issue. The company later said it had applied mitigation measures and was monitoring the recovery of affected services.

However, OpenAI did not disclose the reason behind the disruption or provide an estimated timeline for the complete restoration of services.

The latest outage comes only days after another major disruption affected ChatGPT, Codex and the company’s API services. That earlier incident required nearly 24 hours before services were fully restored.

Saturday’s disruption once again affected users who rely on ChatGPT for communication, research, programming, content creation and other routine tasks. While the company has begun recovery efforts, the cause of the outage and the expected timeline for complete service restoration remain unknown.
