ICAR-KVK Launches Khet Bachao Abhiyan to Promote Sustainable Farming in Diglipur

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, June 27: ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Nimbudera, conducted a series of awareness programmes under “Khet Bachao Abhiyan 2026” in Diglipur Block to promote sustainable farming practices aimed at improving crop productivity, conserving soil health and enhancing farm income.

The programmes were organised on June 25 and 26 at Subhasgram and Madhupur villages in North and Middle Andaman in collaboration with UTATMA, Department of Agriculture, Andaman and Nicobar Administration.

The campaign focused on creating awareness among farmers about sustainable agricultural practices that improve resource-use efficiency, reduce dependence on external agricultural inputs and support long-term productivity.

During the awareness sessions, experts educated farmers on balanced fertiliser application, the effective use of Soil Health Cards, integrated nutrient management through vermicomposting and composting, seed treatment with biofertilisers, scientific paddy cultivation practices, integrated pest management (IPM), and the adoption of organic and natural farming methods.

As part of the programme, quality seeds of improved paddy and vegetable varieties were distributed among farmers to encourage the adoption of improved crop varieties and enhance agricultural productivity.

Farmer-expert interaction sessions formed a key component of the campaign, providing cultivators with an opportunity to discuss field-level experiences, production challenges and crop-related issues directly with agricultural scientists and technical experts.

During these interactions, experts offered guidance on efficient input management, integrated nutrient and pest management, climate-resilient farming practices and the adoption of improved agricultural technologies to support sustainable crop production.

The programme also highlighted the importance of scientific farming methods in maintaining soil fertility, improving crop performance and strengthening agricultural sustainability through balanced resource management.

The awareness campaign was conducted under the guidance of Y. Ramakrishna, Principal Scientist and Head (In-Charge), ICAR–KVK Nimbudera, and Jai Sunder, Director (Acting), ICAR–Central Island Agricultural Research Institute (CIARI), Sri Vijaya Puram.

A total of 42 farmers and farmwomen participated in the programme, taking part in technical sessions and discussions focused on strengthening sustainable agricultural practices in the region.

The initiative forms part of ICAR-KVK’s continued efforts to promote scientific farming and climate-resilient agriculture through knowledge dissemination, technology transfer and farmer capacity building across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
