Mega Cycle Rally to Mark World Bicycle Day in Sri Vijaya Puram

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, June 1: A large-scale cycling event aimed at promoting fitness and healthy living is set to take place in Sri Vijaya Puram next week as the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India, prepares to organise a Mega Fit India Cycle Rally.

The rally is being held in connection with World Bicycle Day and is expected to bring together participants from different sections of society, including youth, students, tourists, parents and cycling enthusiasts. Officials have appealed to the public to actively join the event and support the broader message of adopting healthier lifestyles through regular physical activity.

According to organisers, the rally will be flagged off from Netaji Stadium and will follow a route towards Corbyn’s Cove Beach before returning to the stadium. The event is expected to witness participation from residents across age groups, making it one of the major public fitness activities planned in the Islands this year.

The initiative forms part of the nationwide Fit India Movement, which encourages citizens to incorporate exercise and physical activity into their daily routines. Cycling has increasingly been promoted as an environmentally friendly and affordable mode of transport that also contributes significantly to personal health and well-being.

Officials said the event is designed not only as a recreational activity but also as a platform to raise awareness about the benefits of cycling. Regular cycling is associated with improved cardiovascular health, better stamina, enhanced mental well-being and reduced dependence on motorised transport.

The administration hopes the rally will encourage more people to adopt cycling as part of their everyday lives. In recent years, cycling events have gained popularity across the country as communities seek healthier alternatives to sedentary lifestyles.

Students and young people are expected to form a significant portion of the participants. Educational institutions have been encouraged to spread awareness about the rally among students and motivate them to take part. Families are also being invited to participate together, turning the event into a community celebration of fitness.

To ensure smooth management of the rally, participants have been requested to complete their registration through the Fit India portal. Organisers have emphasised the importance of early registration to facilitate planning and coordination.

Participants will be required to bring their own bicycles for the event. Authorities have advised cyclists to ensure their bicycles are in good condition and to follow safety guidelines during the rally. Volunteers and officials are expected to be deployed along the route to assist participants and ensure smooth movement.

The event comes at a time when public health agencies and sports bodies are increasingly focusing on preventive health measures and active lifestyles. Experts often highlight physical inactivity as a major contributor to lifestyle-related diseases, making initiatives such as cycling rallies important tools for promoting community health.

With growing interest in fitness activities across the Islands, the rally is expected to attract a strong turnout. Organisers believe the event will not only celebrate World Bicycle Day but also inspire residents to embrace cycling as a regular habit.

The Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs has urged Islanders to participate enthusiastically and contribute towards building a fitter and healthier society through cycling and active living.
