New Delhi, April 27: India has appointed former Union Minister Dinesh Trivedi as its next High Commissioner to Bangladesh, a move that comes as both countries seek to recalibrate and strengthen bilateral ties following recent political developments.
The Ministry of External Affairs announced the appointment on Monday, stating that Trivedi is expected to assume his new role shortly. His posting comes at a time when diplomatic engagement between India and Bangladesh is undergoing renewed focus after a period of strain.
Trivedi brings prior ministerial experience to the role, having served as Railway Minister in 2011 and earlier as Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare. His appointment is seen in the context of ongoing efforts to stabilise and enhance cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.

The diplomatic shift follows recent high-level interactions between the two sides. On April 8, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Khalilur Rahman and his delegation in New Delhi, where discussions covered bilateral relations as well as regional and global developments. Both sides agreed to maintain close communication.
Rahman’s visit marked the first high-level engagement from Bangladesh since the Bangladesh Nationalist Party-led government assumed office in February. The visit indicated a renewed phase in bilateral engagement after tensions that emerged during the tenure of the previous interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus, which saw concerns over attacks on Hindu minorities and rising anti-India rhetoric.
Earlier this month, India’s outgoing High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, met Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation across key sectors, with India expressing readiness to deepen ties through a constructive and forward-looking approach based on mutual interests.
Diplomatic engagement between the two countries has also included parliamentary-level interactions. In February, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla visited Bangladesh to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new government and met Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, extending formal greetings on his assumption of office.
The appointment of Trivedi is expected to play a role in advancing diplomatic efforts as both countries navigate evolving political and regional dynamics while seeking to reinforce bilateral cooperation.
