Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug 21: The Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ U-17 girls’ football team has made its first appearance at the Subroto Mukerjee Cup International Football Tournament with a decisive 4-1 victory over Lakshadweep in its opening pool fixture in New Delhi.
The win came on August 19, 2026, a day after the 65th edition of the tournament commenced in the national capital on August 18. The result gave the Islands a winning start to their maiden campaign at the prestigious international football tournament.
The U-17 team is representing the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the competition for the first time. Its opening fixture against Lakshadweep ended with the Islands side securing a four-goal victory margin, scoring four goals against Lakshadweep’s one.
The opening match marked the beginning of the team’s campaign in the tournament, with the players producing a result that placed their maiden participation on a winning footing.
