U-17 State Football Tournament Kicks Off in Andaman, Girls Team Set for Historic Subroto Cup Entry

Sri Vijaya Puram, April 18: The VIII State Level League-cum-Knockout Football Tournament for Under-17 boys and girls began at Netaji Stadium, bringing together teams from nine educational zones across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The tournament was inaugurated by Aditya Sangotra, Director of Education, who highlighted the importance of such competitions in identifying and nurturing young football talent. He said the event provides a competitive platform for students to showcase their skills and gain exposure.

Officials noted that this edition carries added significance for girls’ football, as the winning girls team will represent the islands at the Subroto Cup for the first time, alongside the boys team. The development marks a new step in expanding opportunities for female athletes in the region.

Teams from multiple zones have entered both boys’ and girls’ categories, reflecting broad participation across the islands. The matches on the opening day saw a series of results in both divisions.

In the Under-17 boys’ category, Wimberlygunj secured a 2-0 win over Mayabunder, while Car Nicobar recorded an 8-0 victory against Diglipur. Little Andaman edged past Sri Vijaya Puram with a 3-2 scoreline. Nancowrie defeated Wimberlygunj 2-0, and Campbell Bay overcame Rangat with a 2-1 win.

In the girls’ category, Diglipur registered a 2-0 victory over Rangat. Car Nicobar defeated Little Andaman 1-0, while Sri Vijaya Puram recorded a high-scoring 11-3 win against Wimberlygunj. Nancowrie also posted a 3-0 win over Campbell Bay.

The Director of Education extended his wishes to all participating teams and encouraged players to compete with discipline and sportsmanship. Officials said the tournament will continue with further league and knockout matches in the coming days.

The competition is expected to serve as a key selection ground for identifying talent to represent the islands at higher-level tournaments, including the Subroto Cup.
