Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct. 31: The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are set to host the Indo-ASEAN Summit in December 2026, offering the Union Territory an opportunity to showcase its tourism potential, cultural heritage and strategic importance to an international audience.
Lieutenant Governor Dr. Dinesh Sharma announced the proposed event, which is expected to bring greater international attention to the islands and strengthen their positioning as a tourism destination. The summit is tentatively scheduled for December, with Swaraj Dweep identified as the venue in the administration’s event-planning process.
The Directorate of Information, Publicity and Tourism has initiated preparations for the summit, with an official tender issued for the conceptualisation, design and management of the Indo-ASEAN Summit 2026 at Swaraj Dweep on December 3 and 4. The tender, published on October 19, indicates that preparations have moved beyond the announcement stage, although the final programme and detailed arrangements remain subject to confirmation.

The event is expected to provide a platform to present the islands’ beaches, marine biodiversity, cultural diversity and tourism experiences to an international audience. It could also create opportunities for tourism operators, hospitality businesses and other local enterprises to engage with visitors and representatives from the ASEAN region.
The proposed summit comes amid a broader push by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration to expand tourism while positioning the islands as a destination that combines natural attractions with heritage, adventure and marine-based experiences.
In September, Sharma said a vision document would be prepared to make the islands a more attractive and safe tourism destination. He also emphasised the need to develop new attractions while preserving the archipelago’s natural beauty and addressing challenges posed by natural disasters.
The Union Government has also identified tourism as a key driver of economic development in island territories. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are promoting eco-tourism, cruise tourism, cultural and heritage tourism, adventure activities and new tourism concepts, including birdwatching, caravan tourism and astro-tourism.
Hosting an international summit could strengthen these efforts by giving the islands greater visibility beyond their established domestic tourism markets. It may also encourage discussions on regional connectivity, maritime cooperation and tourism linkages with Southeast Asian destinations.

The islands’ geographical position in the Bay of Bengal and their proximity to Southeast Asia give them significance beyond leisure tourism. India has been pursuing closer regional engagement under its Act East Policy, with maritime connectivity and cooperation with Southeast Asian partners forming important elements of this approach.
However, the potential benefits of the summit will depend on how effectively the event is organised and whether the visibility it generates translates into sustained tourism activity. Connectivity, accommodation capacity, transport between islands, visitor safety and environmental protection will remain important considerations as the administration prepares to host an international gathering.
The summit is therefore expected to be more than a one-time event, with the opportunity to present the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a destination for international visitors, investment and regional engagement. Further details on the participating delegations, agenda and programme are awaited.
