Medicinal Plant Drive in Mayabunder Highlights Ayurveda, Traditional Uses and Conservation Needs

Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 14: A medicinal plant plantation drive was organised at the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, North & Middle Andaman, Mayabunder, as part of the observance of National Ayurveda Day 2026, with the initiative focusing on awareness of Ayurvedic plants and the need for their conservation and cultivation.

Deputy Commissioner, North & Middle Andaman, Sushant Padha, IAS, and Additional District Magistrate, North & Middle Andaman, S. Krishna Chaitanya, planted medicinal plants during the programme, marking the Vriksharopan – Medicinal Plant Drive undertaken as part of this year’s observance.

The programme was conducted by Dr. Priyanka Iqbal, GDMO (Ayurveda) and Medical Officer, along with Dr. M. Sudhi, Drug Inspector, and the team of Dr. R.P. Hospital, Mayabunder.

The drive sought to increase awareness about Ayurvedic medicinal plants, including their traditional uses and health benefits, while drawing attention to the importance of growing and conserving such plants.

The programme also placed medicinal plants within the broader context of health and environmental conservation, highlighting their role in supporting well-being through Ayurveda alongside the need to preserve and cultivate them.

The initiative formed part of the National Ayurveda Day 2026 observance and brought together district administration and medical personnel for a plantation activity centred on medicinal plants.

The programme concluded with emphasis on medicinal plant awareness, Ayurveda and environmental stewardship, according to the details of the event.
