Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug. 7: The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services (AH&VS), through the Veterinary Dispensary at Rangachang, conducted an awareness programme on dog bite prevention and the management of stray dogs at Government Primary School, Beodnabad, on August 4. The initiative focused on equipping students, teachers and parents with practical knowledge to reduce dog bite incidents and promote safe interactions with stray animals.
The programme was organised to raise awareness about safe behaviour around stray dogs, measures to prevent dog bite incidents and the role of community participation in the responsible management of stray dogs. The Department sought to educate participants on safety practices while encouraging responsible and informed engagement with animals in public spaces.
During the session, officials explained how to recognise dog behaviour and warning signs that may indicate aggression or distress. Participants were also informed about the precautions to be followed when encountering stray dogs and the actions that should be avoided in such situations to minimise the risk of dog bites.
The awareness programme further covered the immediate steps that should be taken if a dog bite occurs, including basic first aid measures. The session aimed to ensure that students, teachers and parents were aware of appropriate responses in the event of such incidents.
According to the Department, the programme was conducted in an interactive format, allowing participants to raise questions and seek clarification on issues related to stray dog behaviour, personal safety and dog bite prevention. Students actively participated in the discussions and showed interest in learning practical safety measures and first aid practices.
The programme also emphasised the importance of treating animals with compassion while maintaining public safety. Officials highlighted the need for responsible community participation in stray dog management alongside awareness of preventive measures to reduce the likelihood of dog bite incidents.
The awareness drive forms part of the Department’s efforts to improve public understanding of dog bite prevention and encourage safe, informed and responsible interaction with stray dogs within the community.
