Drainage and Bus Stand Projects Launched in South Andaman to Improve Rural Infrastructure

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair), April 17: Two infrastructure projects aimed at improving sanitation and commuter facilities in rural South Andaman were inaugurated on April 16, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen local public amenities.

The Zilla Parishad, South Andaman, formally opened a non-roadside drainage system at Guptapara and a renovated bus stand at Humphrygunj. Officials stated that the initiatives are intended to address drainage concerns and provide safer, more convenient public spaces for residents.

The bus stand at Humphrygunj has been upgraded to serve as a secure waiting area, particularly benefiting school students and daily commuters. The drainage project in Guptapara has been undertaken to improve sanitation and manage water flow more effectively in the area.

The inauguration was carried out by Prakash Adhikari, Adhyaksh of Zilla Parishad, South Andaman. The event was attended by Rajanish Singh, Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Parishad, along with Zilla Parishad Member Parmila Kumari representing Chouldari. Panchayat Samiti members from Guptapara and Humphrygunj, Pradhans of the respective Gram Panchayats, elected representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions, and officials from the Engineering Wing were also present.

Addressing the gathering, officials emphasised the role of such projects in improving the quality of life in rural areas. They highlighted that strengthening basic infrastructure, including drainage systems and public transport facilities, remains a priority for local governance bodies.

The leadership reiterated its focus on inclusive and sustainable development, noting that targeted interventions in essential services contribute to long-term community welfare.

Local representatives welcomed the completion of the projects and acknowledged their relevance to everyday needs in the region. They also stressed the importance of maintaining momentum in infrastructure development to address the growing requirements of rural populations.

The programme concluded with expressions of appreciation for the efforts of all departments and stakeholders involved in the execution of the projects.
