New Delhi, June 23: Escalating tensions in West Asia and disruptions along critical global shipping lanes have brought renewed attention to the Eastern Maritime Corridor (EMC), a trade route increasingly viewed as a strategic alternative for India’s energy security and international commerce.
According to an article published in India Narrative, recent developments in the region, including disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz, have intensified concerns over global energy supplies and supply chain stability. Against this backdrop, the EMC, which links Chennai Port in southern India with Vladivostok Port in Russia’s Far East, has emerged as an important economic and geopolitical corridor for India.
The report notes that the route gained significance after India operationalised the Eastern Maritime Corridor in 2024 during a period of instability in the Red Sea region. At the time, commercial shipping faced threats arising from the Hamas-Israel conflict, with Yemen’s Houthi rebels targeting international vessels in the Red Sea using drones and missiles in support of Hamas.
The article states that the more recent conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, coupled with disruptions affecting the Strait of Hormuz, has further highlighted the need for reliable alternative maritime routes.
