Sri Vijaya Puram, April 21: Rural development works under the Viksit Bharat, Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, 2025 have gained pace across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, with multiple projects underway in April 2026 aimed at employment generation and creation of durable community assets.
The programme, implemented across South Andaman and Nicobar districts, has focused on strengthening livelihoods while ensuring adherence to timelines, transparency and quality standards in execution. Officials have indicated that continuous monitoring is being carried out at various levels to ensure effective delivery of benefits to targeted beneficiaries.
Across Prothrapur block, road construction and livelihood-linked infrastructure form a key part of the works. A two-layer WBM road is being constructed at Calicut, while multiple poultry shelters are being developed in Beodnabad under different beneficiaries. These projects together account for several hundred sanctioned persondays under the scheme.
In Little Andaman’s Netaji Nagar, drainage infrastructure has been prioritised, with works including construction of katcha drains connecting residential areas to natural water channels. These projects are expected to address local water flow issues while generating employment opportunities.
Ferrargunj block has seen a diverse range of works, including pond construction, desilting of nallahs, development of playgrounds, and construction of all-weather rural roads. Projects are also underway in Mithakhari, Tushnabad and Collinpur, covering drainage improvement, minor irrigation ponds and land development initiatives. Grazing land development through fodder plantation has also been taken up under Hope Town Gram Panchayat.
In Car Nicobar, large-scale land development near Chuckchucha beach and horticulture expansion in Lapathy village are among the major projects. These initiatives have been allocated significant persondays, reflecting the scale of work in tribal council areas.
Campbell Bay block has also reported ongoing infrastructure works, including katcha drain construction, mini playground development and road construction in Makachua village. Land and drainage development works in Laxmi Nagar have been sanctioned with high personday allocations, indicating a focus on both infrastructure and livelihood support.
In Nancowry, plantation and agricultural development projects are being undertaken across villages such as Hitui and Kakana, with coconut and spice cultivation initiatives. Chowra Island has also seen the development of a playground aimed at improving community infrastructure.
The administration has emphasised maximising personday generation during the financial year, while ensuring compliance with programme guidelines. The scheme continues to prioritise sustainable livelihood creation alongside rural infrastructure development.
The Viksit Bharat, Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, 2025 is being implemented as part of a broader effort to strengthen rural economies and provide consistent employment opportunities across remote and island regions.
