Sri Vijaya Puram, April 21: A hit-and-run case reported from Baratang was resolved within hours after police traced and arrested the accused along with the vehicle involved in the incident, following a late-night road accident that left a man seriously injured.
The incident occurred on April 19, 2026, at around 9:00 pm near South Creek in Baratang, when authorities received information about a road traffic accident involving a pedestrian. A police team from Baratang Police Station reached the spot and shifted the injured individual to the Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Baratang for treatment.
The victim was identified as Johnson Dung Dung, a resident of Amba Kona, who sustained grievous injuries in the incident. Preliminary information indicated that a speeding vehicle struck him and fled the scene immediately after the collision, leaving no immediate trace of the driver or the vehicle involved.

Following the report, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Investigators initiated a coordinated search operation during the night to identify and locate the vehicle responsible for the accident.
A team led by the Station House Officer (SHO) of Baratang Police Station, along with SI Subramani, ASI Muchray Munda, and other personnel, carried out tracking efforts across key transit points. The operation included monitoring vehicle movement through Middle Strait and Kadamtala, along with the examination of CCTV footage from available locations.
Based on these inputs, the suspect vehicle was identified, and follow-up action led to the apprehension of the accused within approximately five hours of the incident. The vehicle involved in the hit-and-run was also seized as part of the investigation.
The case highlights the recurring issue of road accidents involving fleeing vehicles, particularly in areas with limited night-time surveillance and challenging terrain. Authorities reiterated the need for immediate assistance to accident victims, stressing that timely intervention during the critical “Golden Hour” can significantly improve survival chances.
Under the Rahveer Scheme, individuals who assist road accident victims are eligible for recognition and rewards. Officials have urged the public to extend help in such situations without hesitation.
Residents have also been requested to share credible information related to crimes or illegal activities with the nearest police station or through emergency helplines, including 100, 112, and 03192-273344. Authorities have stated that the identity of informers will remain confidential, and appropriate rewards may be provided for actionable information.
The investigation into the case is ongoing, with further legal proceedings expected based on the evidence collected.
