Washington Judge Orders Donald Trump Name Removed From Kennedy Center

Date:

Washington, May 30: A federal judge in the United States has ruled that the addition of President Donald Trump’s name to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was unlawful, ordering the removal of the revised name within two weeks and temporarily blocking plans to shut down the institution for two years.

The ruling was delivered by Judge Christopher Cooper of the Federal District Court in Washington, who found that the Kennedy Center’s Board of Trustees exceeded its authority by approving a name change without congressional approval. The decision marks a significant legal development in an ongoing dispute surrounding the governance and identity of one of the United States’ most prominent cultural institutions.

In his order, Cooper stated that Congress had established the Kennedy Center as the sole national memorial to the 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, within Washington and its surrounding area. He concluded that the board did not possess the authority to alter the institution’s formal name through unilateral action.

According to the ruling, the Kennedy Center’s governing statute clearly identifies the institution as a memorial dedicated to President Kennedy. The judge observed that only Congress has the authority to change the official name of the centre, as Congress itself created and named the institution.

The dispute arose after the Kennedy Center Board voted in December to rename the venue “The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.” The move generated criticism from sections of the public and political leaders, while several prominent artists reportedly withdrew planned performances at the venue.

In addition to addressing the naming issue, the court also granted a preliminary injunction preventing the Trump administration from closing the Kennedy Center for approximately two years. The administration had announced in February that entertainment operations at the centre would be suspended beginning in July to facilitate construction-related work.

Judge Cooper stated that the decision to halt operations had been based on an incomplete assessment that did not adequately consider the institution’s statutory responsibilities or the broader consequences that closure could have on its programming and memorial functions.

However, the court clarified that the injunction does not prevent the Kennedy Center from proceeding with planned capital repair and infrastructure projects. The ruling also leaves open the possibility of future closure decisions if the board undertakes a fresh and comprehensive evaluation of its obligations and responsibilities.

Since returning to office for a second term, Trump has played a prominent role in the Kennedy Center’s administration, replacing previous leadership and assuming the position of board chair.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is widely regarded as the national cultural centre of the United States and hosts performances across music, opera, theatre, dance and other artistic disciplines. The court’s ruling preserves both its existing name and its operational continuity while broader legal and administrative questions surrounding its governance continue to attract public attention.
