Sri Vijaya Puram, June 4: A large old tree fell near the Fire Brigade area on Thursday morning, temporarily obstructing traffic and damaging an electrical wire, even as weather authorities warned of thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands over the coming days.
The incident occurred amid adverse weather conditions affecting parts of the Islands. Soon after the tree collapsed, teams from the Andaman Public Works Department (APWD) reached the spot and launched clearance operations to restore normal traffic movement.
Workers cut the fallen tree into sections and began removing debris from the roadway. The prompt response helped minimize disruption and ensured the road was reopened to commuters within a short period.
Officials said no major injuries or significant property damage were reported. However, an electrical wire connected to a nearby utility pole was damaged when the tree fell.
Authorities continued restoration work while monitoring the area for any further risks posed by unstable trees or weather-related incidents.
The incident comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of 40–50 kmph and lightning at isolated places across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from June 4 to June 9.
According to the weather advisory, squally winds with speeds reaching 40–50 kmph and gusting up to 60 kmph are likely to prevail along and off the Andaman and Nicobar coast during the period.
In view of the rough sea conditions, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along and off the Andaman and Nicobar coast until June 7.
Weather officials have urged residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under trees during lightning activity, and report any damaged infrastructure or hazardous conditions to the concerned authorities.
The fall of the tree near the Fire Brigade area has once again highlighted the vulnerability of aging roadside trees during periods of strong winds and heavy weather activity.
With thunderstorms and gusty conditions expected to continue over the next several days, authorities are maintaining heightened vigilance and advising the public to follow weather advisories issued by the administration and meteorological agencies.
Fortunately, Thursday’s incident did not result in any casualties, with the damaged electrical wire being the only reported loss. Traffic movement in the area was restored after the completion of APWD’s clearance operations.
