Thunderstorms, Lightning Forecast Across A&N Islands; Sea Conditions to Remain Rough

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug. 5: Residents of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are likely to experience heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds over the coming days, with a weather advisory also urging fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea until August 8 due to adverse marine conditions.

According to the forecast, heavy rain measuring 7 cm to 11 cm is very likely at one or two places across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on August 5, 6 and 7. During the same period, thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds with speeds of 50 to 60 kmph and lightning are also very likely at one or two places over the islands.

The forecast indicates that while the heavy rainfall warning is limited to August 5 to 7, thunderstorms with gusty winds of 50 to 60 kmph and lightning are expected to continue at one or two places across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on August 8, 9 and 10.

Marine conditions are also expected to remain unfavourable over the next few days. Squally winds with speeds of 35 to 45 kmph, occasionally gusting up to 55 kmph, are likely to prevail along and off the Andaman and Nicobar coasts until August 8.

In view of the prevailing sea conditions, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along and off the Andaman and Nicobar coasts until August 8.

The advisory highlights the likelihood of multiple weather-related hazards over both land and coastal areas during the forecast period, with heavy rainfall expected in parts of the islands during the first three days and thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds forecast to continue through August 10. Residents and those engaged in marine activities have been advised to take note of the weather conditions and the advisory issued for coastal waters.
