Sri Vijaya Puram, June 8: A five-day awareness and outreach campaign focusing on rural sanitation, waste management and climate-conscious practices concluded across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, with officials reporting active participation from Panchayati Raj Institutions, government departments and local communities.
The campaign, titled “Swachh Gaon, Surakshit Jalvayu”, was organized by the Directorate of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj Institutions and Urban Local Bodies under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) Phase-II. Conducted from June 1 to June 5, the initiative coincided with nationwide activities linked to environmental awareness and sustainable development.
Officials said the campaign was implemented across all three districts of the Union Territory with the objective of strengthening awareness regarding scientific waste management, environmental conservation and community-led sanitation practices in rural areas.
A series of activities were undertaken during the five-day programme, beginning with sensitization initiatives involving Gram Panchayats and local stakeholders. Authorities said these interactions focused on promoting greater understanding of rural sanitation goals, waste segregation practices and the importance of community participation in maintaining clean surroundings.
As part of the campaign, teams conducted site visits and assessments of waste management facilities in various rural areas. These visits were aimed at evaluating existing infrastructure and identifying areas where improvements could be made in the collection, segregation and disposal of solid waste.
Consultations were also held with rural stakeholders, including elected representatives, community leaders and local residents. Officials noted that such interactions are essential for understanding local challenges and encouraging collaborative solutions to environmental concerns.
Awareness drives and cleanliness campaigns formed a major component of the programme. Volunteers, local bodies and government functionaries participated in efforts to clean public spaces and spread messages regarding responsible waste disposal and environmental stewardship.
One of the key highlights of the campaign was the organization of Special Gram Sabhas across various Panchayats. These meetings focused on discussions related to the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, with residents being informed about their roles and responsibilities in ensuring effective implementation of waste management practices at the village level.
Officials said the Gram Sabhas provided a platform for community members to discuss local sanitation issues, suggest improvements and learn about recent regulatory measures aimed at strengthening environmental protection.
The campaign witnessed broad participation from Panchayati Raj Institutions, which played a central role in mobilizing communities and facilitating local-level activities. Government officials from various departments also joined awareness programmes and field initiatives throughout the campaign period.
According to the Directorate, the programme was designed not only to improve awareness but also to encourage behavioural change regarding waste generation and disposal. Authorities emphasized that long-term success in sanitation and environmental protection depends largely on sustained community involvement rather than one-time interventions.
Environmental experts have increasingly highlighted the importance of rural waste management in safeguarding ecosystems and reducing pollution. In island territories such as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, effective waste management assumes added significance because of ecological sensitivity and limited land availability for waste disposal.
Officials stated that the campaign also encouraged discussions on climate resilience and sustainable living practices, linking local sanitation efforts with broader environmental goals.
The conclusion of the five-day initiative marks another step in ongoing efforts under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) to improve rural sanitation infrastructure and promote environmentally responsible practices across the islands.
Authorities expressed hope that the awareness generated through the campaign would translate into stronger community participation in waste management initiatives and contribute to cleaner villages and healthier living environments in the months ahead.
