Emergency Surgery at Mayabunder Hospital Saves Young Woman with Twisted Ovarian Cyst

Date:

Mayabunder, June 8: A timely medical intervention by doctors at Dr. RP District Hospital, Mayabunder helped save the life of a 22-year-old woman from Webi who was admitted with severe abdominal pain and persistent vomiting, highlighting the growing capability of healthcare services in North and Middle Andaman.

The young woman arrived at the hospital after experiencing acute abdominal pain and repeated episodes of vomiting for a day. Given the severity of her symptoms, the medical team immediately initiated a detailed clinical evaluation to determine the cause of her condition.

Doctors conducted an ultrasonography (USG) examination, which revealed the presence of a dermoid cyst. Considering the patient’s worsening condition and the possibility of serious complications, the medical team decided to proceed with emergency surgery without delay.

An urgent laparotomy was performed, during which surgeons discovered a twisted ovarian cyst measuring approximately 12 by 8 centimetres. Medical experts explain that ovarian torsion, caused when an ovarian cyst twists around its supporting structures, can cut off blood supply to the ovary and lead to severe pain, tissue damage and potentially life-threatening complications if not treated promptly.

Hospital officials said the successful identification and removal of the cyst prevented further deterioration of the patient’s condition. The cyst was safely excised and has been sent for histopathological examination to determine its exact nature and rule out any underlying concerns.

The surgery was carried out by Dr. Meenakshi, Gynecologist, and Dr. Arnold Ashu, Specialist Anesthetist. They were assisted by Operation Theatre staff members Ms. Suhasini and Shri Tamay, whose coordinated efforts contributed to the successful outcome of the procedure.

According to hospital authorities, the case demonstrated the importance of rapid diagnosis and multidisciplinary teamwork in emergency healthcare. Timely imaging, swift decision-making and the availability of trained medical personnel enabled the hospital to respond effectively to the emergency situation.

Healthcare professionals note that ovarian cysts are relatively common among women, but complications such as torsion require immediate medical attention. Symptoms including sudden severe abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting should not be ignored, as delays in treatment can lead to serious consequences.

The successful surgery also reflects the strengthening of healthcare infrastructure and specialist services in remote island districts. Residents of North and Middle Andaman often depend on district-level hospitals for emergency care, making the availability of skilled specialists and surgical facilities crucial for timely treatment.

Hospital administration praised the doctors and support staff involved in the procedure, acknowledging their professionalism, dedication and commitment to patient care. Officials stated that such successful interventions reinforce public confidence in government healthcare institutions and demonstrate the ability of district hospitals to handle complex medical emergencies.

Over the years, Dr. RP District Hospital has expanded its role as a key healthcare facility serving residents across North and Middle Andaman. Cases requiring urgent surgical intervention are increasingly being managed locally, reducing the need for referrals and ensuring quicker treatment for patients.

Medical authorities emphasized that awareness and early reporting of symptoms remain essential for successful outcomes. They encouraged residents to seek immediate medical assistance whenever severe or unusual symptoms arise rather than delaying treatment.

The successful emergency surgery stands as another example of the critical role played by healthcare workers in safeguarding lives and delivering quality medical services to communities across the islands.
