Sri Vijaya Puram, July 16: A roadside inspection by senior officials of the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council (SVPMC) uncovered a large accumulation of illegally dumped Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste, discarded tyres and other waste materials along the stretch between Power House and Megapode Junction, prompting an immediate cleanliness drive and a warning of strict action against violators.
The inspection found substantial quantities of construction debris and other waste dumped along the roadside, raising concerns over public cleanliness, environmental pollution and obstruction of public spaces. Following the inspection, the civic body directed officials to undertake immediate removal of the accumulated waste.
Acting on the directions, the Senior Sanitary Inspector-I and the concerned Sanitary Inspector of Ward No. 03 conducted a special cleanliness drive along the identified stretch. During the operation, approximately two truckloads of Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste were collected.
The recovered construction debris was handed over to the Junior Engineer (Road Works) for reuse in road development works. Discarded tyres and other waste materials found at the site were removed and transported for appropriate disposal, restoring the cleanliness of the affected area.
The Municipal Council stated that indiscriminate dumping of construction waste and other discarded materials on roadsides and public places adversely affects the city’s appearance and creates environmental, health and public safety concerns. It said such dumping can obstruct public movement and contribute to pollution if left unchecked.
SVPMC has appealed to residents, contractors, commercial establishments and the general public not to dump Construction and Demolition waste, discarded tyres, construction materials or any other waste in open spaces, along roadsides or at public locations. The Council urged all stakeholders to use only authorised waste collection and disposal systems for disposal of such materials.
The civic body also warned that any individual or establishment found violating these directions would face penal action under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, relevant Municipal Bye-laws and other applicable legal provisions. The action may include the imposition of environmental compensation and monetary fines against offenders.
According to the Council, sustained public cooperation remains essential for maintaining cleanliness across the city and ensuring responsible waste management practices. It said community participation is necessary to support ongoing sanitation efforts and achieve the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission while keeping Sri Vijaya Puram clean and environmentally sustainable.
The latest enforcement drive underscores the Municipal Council’s continued action against illegal dumping and its effort to maintain public spaces free from construction debris and other waste materials through regular inspections and field-level interventions.
