Andaman Launches Historic DC SP Cup Volleyball Championship

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, July 27: Sport will take centre stage across South Andaman from today as the district administration launches its first-ever district-level Inter-Panchayat Volleyball Championship, bringing together teams from across the region under the Nasha Mukt Abhiyan to promote a healthy, drug-free lifestyle and strengthen community participation.

The DC SP Cup Inter-Village Volleyball Championship 2026 for men and women is being organised by the Deputy Commissioner (South Andaman) in collaboration with the Superintendent of Police (South Andaman), the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs, the Directorate of Education and MY Bharat. The tournament will be held from today until August 8 at Ferrargunj Panchayat, Sri Vijaya Puram, Swaraj Dweep, Shaheed Dweep and Little Andaman.

The championship is being organised under the guiding themes of “Together for a Better Tomorrow” and “Our District, Our Pride”. According to the organisers, the initiative aims to use sport as a platform to raise awareness and encourage community engagement on key social, environmental and public health issues.

The tournament is structured around three focus areas identified by the district administration—SWACHH (A Cleaner District), SWASTH (A Healthier Community) and SAKSHAM (A Capable Citizenry). Through these pillars, the event seeks to combine sporting participation with broader public awareness initiatives under the Nasha Mukt Abhiyan.

According to the administration, the championship marks the first time a South Andaman District-level Inter-Panchayat Volleyball Championship has been organised by the District Administration in coordination with the Departments of Sports, Education and Rural Development under the Nasha Mukt Abhiyan. The initiative reflects efforts to encourage sporting culture, promote healthy living and strengthen grassroots participation through organised competition.

A total of 31 teams are participating in the championship. Of these, 19 teams are from Ferrargunj Panchayat, three from Sri Vijaya Puram, two from Swaraj Dweep, one from Shaheed Dweep and six from Little Andaman, representing wide participation from different parts of South Andaman.

The administration has announced cash prizes for the winning teams. The champions will receive ₹12,000, while the runners-up will be awarded ₹6,000.

Officials have appealed to residents to extend their support and actively participate in the championship, describing it as a landmark sporting initiative aimed at spreading the message of a drug-free society through sports while fostering greater community involvement across South Andaman.
