Andaman Farmers Trained in Modern Goat Farming, Livestock Insurance and Institutional Credit

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept. 10:  Farmers in New Bimblitan received practical training on modern goat farming, with the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services focusing on scientific livestock management and access to government support schemes.

The Farmers’ Field School was organised by the Senior Veterinary Officer and team of Veterinary Hospital Garacharma at the field of progressive farmer Rajiv under the National Livestock Mission (NLM). Local farmers and stakeholders participated in the programme, while PRI member K. Mani Vannan also attended the training as a participant.

During the interactive session, the veterinary team explained government programmes aimed at supporting livestock entrepreneurs. The session covered the NLM Entrepreneurship Development Programme, Livestock Insurance Scheme, Artificial Insemination in goats for breed improvement and Kisan Credit Card facilities to help farmers access institutional credit.

The training also addressed the practical aspects of goat farming. Veterinary officials provided guidance on scientific housing, balanced nutrition, routine healthcare, disease management and maintaining sanitation at farms.

The programme combined technical guidance with practical support for participants. Steel basins and refreshments were distributed during the field school.

Farmers also used the concluding interactive session to raise technical questions and clarify their doubts with the veterinary team. Participants expressed gratitude to the department for conducting the outreach programme in their locality.

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services said it would continue organising Farmers’ Field Schools and capacity-building programmes to promote scientific goat farming in the Islands.
