Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair) 14: A coordinated effort to strengthen market access for Self-Help Group (SHG) products through the tourism and hospitality ecosystem was discussed at a stakeholder meeting held at the Conference Hall of the Directorate of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Institutions, Marine Hill.
The meeting brought together representatives from hoteliers associations, cab operators, tourism bodies, and SHG members to explore structured collaboration for promoting locally produced goods across the hospitality and transport sectors. The discussions focused on improving visibility and market integration for SHG products within the growing tourism economy of the islands.
Officials and participants examined ways to align SHG production with the requirements of hotels and tourism-linked businesses, noting the increasing demand for locally made items in the sector. The dialogue centred on creating a consistent supply and marketing channel that connects SHG producers directly with potential commercial buyers.
A key proposal discussed during the meeting was the establishment of sales outlets and display counters for SHG products within hotels and at prominent tourist locations. Stakeholders expressed support for the initiative, indicating willingness to facilitate dedicated spaces that would allow tourists easier access to locally made goods.
The initiative is aimed at enhancing both product visibility and consumer reach, while also ensuring that SHG members benefit from stable demand channels. Participants underlined that such integration could strengthen rural and community-based entrepreneurship by linking it directly with the tourism value chain.
Cab associations and hotel representatives highlighted the potential of using transport and hospitality touchpoints as platforms for promoting SHG products to visitors, thereby expanding the market footprint of local producers. The discussions also reflected the need to better align production standards and packaging with tourism market expectations.
The meeting concluded with a consensus among stakeholders on the importance of building sustained partnerships between SHGs and the tourism sector. The agreed approach focuses on creating livelihood opportunities through structured market access and promoting locally produced goods as part of the islands’ tourism experience.
Officials noted that the initiative, if implemented effectively, could contribute to strengthening community-based enterprises while simultaneously enhancing the visibility of local products in key tourism zones across the islands.
