Small Arms Firing Practice Planned at Prothrapur Range

Date:

The Andaman and Nicobar Police have announced a schedule for small arms firing practice at the Police Firing Range in Prothrapur, with residents in nearby areas advised to exercise caution and avoid the vicinity during the notified dates and timings.

An official notification issued on Thursday stated that the firing practice would be conducted on February 21, 24, 26 and 28, as well as on March 3 and 7, between 6 am and 12 noon. The exercise is being carried out in accordance with provisions under the Manoeuvres, Field Firing and Artillery Practice Act, 1938.

Authorities have requested the general public, particularly residents of Bird Line and Prothrapur areas, to keep themselves and their pets or animals away from the firing range during the specified hours on the scheduled days. The advisory has been issued as a safety precaution to prevent any untoward incidents during the training exercise.

Police officials said such firing practices are conducted periodically as part of routine training and preparedness measures for personnel. These exercises are essential to maintain operational readiness and ensure familiarity with firearms under controlled conditions.

The notification clarified that the restriction applies only during the specified dates and time slots, and that normal movement may resume once the firing practice concludes for the day. Residents have been urged to cooperate with the advisory in the interest of public safety.

Firing ranges such as the one at Prothrapur are designated training facilities where controlled exercises are conducted under strict supervision. However, officials noted that adherence to safety advisories by nearby residents remains a critical component of risk management during such activities.

The police have also advised local residents to remain alert to warning signs or instructions displayed in the area during the firing schedule. In previous instances, advance public notices have been used to minimise inconvenience while ensuring adequate safety buffers around training sites.

Authorities said further information or updates, if any, would be communicated through official channels. Meanwhile, the police have reiterated the importance of public cooperation to ensure the smooth conduct of training exercises without disruption or safety concerns.
