As Summer Sets in, Water Supply May Face Strain in Sri Vijaya Puram

Date:

With the onset of the summer season and a gradual decline in water levels, residents of Sri Vijaya Puram may experience fluctuations or temporary disruptions in water supply in certain localities, the Sri Vijaya Puram Municipal Council has said, underlining that efforts are underway to ensure equitable and uninterrupted distribution during the peak-demand period.

In an advisory issued on Thursday, the Municipal Council acknowledged that seasonal changes often put pressure on existing water resources, particularly as consumption rises during the summer months. It said proactive measures were being taken to manage supply across residential areas and minimise inconvenience to consumers, while appealing to the public to promptly flag any issues encountered at the local level.

The Council emphasised that timely reporting of water-related problems would allow authorities to respond faster and deploy corrective measures without delay. Residents facing irregular supply, low pressure or complete disruption in their areas have been requested to contact the Municipal Council’s Control Room, which has been set up at the Municipal Headquarters and is operating round the clock to receive complaints and provide assistance.

According to the advisory, the Control Room can be reached 24×7 at 03192-231179, and all complaints registered through this channel will be attended to on priority. Officials said the dedicated facility has been strengthened to handle increased complaint volumes during the summer, when demand for water typically outstrips supply in some pockets.

The Municipal Council has also drawn attention to the issue of pipeline leakages, which often contribute to avoidable water loss during periods of scarcity. Residents have been urged to immediately inform the Control Room if they notice any leakage or damage to pipelines in their locality. Early reporting, the Council noted, would help prevent wastage of treated water and enable swift repairs, ensuring that limited resources are used efficiently.

Officials said that preventing leakage-related losses was critical to maintaining a stable supply system during the summer months, particularly when raw water availability declines. They added that field teams have been instructed to act promptly on leakage complaints to restore normal supply and reduce pressure on the overall distribution network.

Reiterating its commitment to public service delivery, the Municipal Council said it remained fully prepared to respond to emerging challenges linked to seasonal water stress. The advisory stressed that coordinated efforts between civic authorities and residents would be key to sustaining a smooth supply system through the summer.

The Council also appealed for public cooperation in adopting responsible water-use practices during the period. While no mandatory restrictions have been announced, officials indicated that prudent consumption and community vigilance could play a significant role in preventing acute shortages in vulnerable areas.

Sri Vijaya Puram, like many urban centres in the islands, depends on a finite water supply system that becomes increasingly strained during summer due to reduced recharge and higher daily consumption. Civic authorities said advance planning, rapid grievance redressal and public participation were essential to managing this annual challenge.

The Municipal Council said it would continue to monitor supply patterns closely and take necessary steps to address localised disruptions as they arise, assuring residents that all genuine complaints would be addressed at the earliest possible time.
