Sri Vijaya Puram, May 4: Police in South Andaman seized 8.19 grams of suspected methamphetamine and arrested a 23-year-old man during a targeted operation near Changappa Nagar on Sunday evening.
On 03/05/2026, a police team from Aberdeen Police Station conducted the operation after receiving specific intelligence about the accused, Mohd. Shakib, allegedly possessing and attempting to sell methamphetamine near the main gate of Changappa Nagar Van, close to Chanmari Butt. The information suggested that the suspect was waiting to strike a deal with potential buyers and could dispose of the contraband or flee if not apprehended immediately.
The information was recorded in the General Diary and conveyed to SDPO (South Andaman) D K Singh. A raiding team led by Inspector Vijay Kumar was formed and dispatched to the location. The team left the police station at 1700 hrs and reached the spot around 1715 hrs, where the suspect was found waiting by the roadside and was detained.
Two independent witnesses, R Manish and M Satish Kumar, were brought to the spot and joined the proceedings. Shortly after, SDPO D K Singh reached the location. The accused was informed of his legal rights under Section 50 of the NDPS Act, 1985, in Hindi. After acknowledging the notice and declining to search the raiding team, he consented to a personal search in the presence of the gazetted officer.
During the search, a transparent polythene pouch containing a crystalline substance was recovered from the waist area of the accused’s cargo pants. The substance weighed 8.19 grams, including the packaging. A preliminary test conducted using a drug detection kit indicated the substance to be methamphetamine.
The substance was seized and sealed on the spot using a brass seal marked “DJ” in the presence of witnesses. The process was documented, signed by the accused, witnesses, and the gazetted officer, and videographed through the e-Sakhsya mobile application, generating a digital evidence certificate under the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023.
After the seizure, Mohd. Shakib was arrested at 1845 hrs under provisions of the NDPS Act. The grounds of arrest were explained to him, and the information was communicated to his family. The accused was taken into custody and brought to Aberdeen Police Station, where the seized material was deposited in the malkhana following due procedure.
The case pertains to alleged possession and intended sale of methamphetamine.
