Legal Metrology Verification Drive Scheduled for Swaraj Dweep and Shaheed Dweep From July 7

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, July 6: A verification and stamping drive for weighing and measuring instruments will be conducted in Swaraj Dweep and Shaheed Dweep this week, with authorities warning that the use of unverified or faulty equipment after the scheduled inspection will invite legal action under the applicable provisions of law.

The Directorate of Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs has informed that the Legal Metrology Officer, along with a departmental team, will conduct the exercise at Swaraj Dweep on July 7 and 8, followed by Shaheed Dweep on July 9.

The inspection has been scheduled for traders, auto-rickshaw owners and drivers, bar establishments and other concerned Government and semi-Government establishments operating on the two islands.

According to the department, the exercise will focus on the verification and stamping of all weighing and measuring instruments used for commercial and official purposes in the notified areas. The initiative is intended to ensure that measuring equipment complies with the prescribed legal standards before being used in transactions involving consumers.

Authorities have advised all concerned establishments and individuals to make their weighing and measuring instruments available during the scheduled camp for verification and stamping by the Legal Metrology team.

The department has also cautioned that the use of unverified or faulty weighing and measuring instruments after the completion of the scheduled verification programme will be treated seriously.

It stated that stringent legal action, as prescribed under the relevant laws governing legal metrology, will be initiated against anyone found using unverified or defective instruments after the stipulated dates.

The verification drive forms part of the department’s routine regulatory exercise to ensure that commercial weighing and measuring instruments remain compliant with statutory requirements and are properly certified before use.

Traders, transport operators, commercial establishments and other concerned entities in Swaraj Dweep and Shaheed Dweep have been advised to complete the verification process within the notified schedule to avoid legal action.
