Sri Vijaya Puram, May 4: In a decisive crackdown on illegal activities, a team from Police Station Billiground conducted a targeted search operation in the Kargil Tikrey forest area on May 1, 2026, leading to the destruction of approximately 200 litres of fermented wash used for brewing illicit liquor.
The operation was launched after police received credible information about unlawful liquor production taking place deep inside the forest. Acting swiftly on the intelligence, the team reached the suspected location and carried out a systematic search of the area. During the operation, officers discovered a large quantity of fermented wash-locally referred to as lehan-which is typically used as the base substance in the distillation of illicit alcohol.
Police officials confirmed that no individuals were found at the site during the raid, suggesting that those involved may have fled prior to the arrival of the enforcement team. Despite the absence of suspects, the recovery of such a significant quantity of brewing material indicates that the operation was part of an organized attempt to produce and distribute illegal liquor in the region.

Following due legal procedures, the entire stock of fermented wash along with related materials and equipment found at the site was destroyed on the spot. Authorities stated that this step was necessary to prevent the materials from being reused or diverted for further illegal activities.
Law enforcement officials emphasized that illicit liquor production poses a serious threat not only to law and order but also to public health. Alcohol produced through unauthorized and unregulated methods often contains harmful substances, which can lead to severe illness, poisoning, or even death among consumers. Such operations also contribute to illegal trade networks and revenue loss to the government.
The Nicobar and Mayabunder (N&MA) District Police reiterated their strict zero-tolerance policy towards illicit liquor activities. Officials highlighted that regular surveillance and intelligence-based operations are being conducted across vulnerable and remote areas to curb such unlawful practices.
“This operation reflects our continued commitment to ensuring public safety and maintaining strict enforcement against illegal activities,” a police official stated. “We will not allow such operations to flourish, especially in remote forest areas where monitoring is challenging.”
Authorities have also called upon members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by sharing any information related to illegal brewing, trafficking, or other criminal activities. Citizens can report such information to the nearest police station or through emergency helplines, including 100, 112, and 03192-273344.
Police assured that the identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential and that appropriate rewards will be provided for credible and actionable information. Officials stressed that community participation plays a crucial role in tackling such issues effectively.
The successful raid in Kargil Tikrey forest stands as a strong message against illegal liquor operations in the region. It also underscores the proactive approach of the police in identifying and dismantling such activities before they can pose a larger threat to society.
