New Delhi, June 16: The Centre has temporarily suspended operations of its newly launched Cell Broadcast Alert System, a nationwide emergency warning platform designed to deliver real-time disaster and public safety alerts directly to mobile phones, following reports of a technical malfunction involving a misrouted alert.
The decision comes less than a month after the system was introduced as a key component of India’s disaster preparedness and emergency communication framework.
According to reports, the suspension was ordered after an alert generated by disaster management units in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh was allegedly routed incorrectly, raising concerns about the reliability and accuracy of the system’s alert distribution mechanism.
Authorities have not officially disclosed the precise reason for the suspension. However, reports indicate that a technical issue involving the routing of emergency messages may have prompted the precautionary measure.
Sources cited in media reports suggest that an alert intended for a limited audience was inadvertently transmitted more broadly than intended, including to the contact number of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The incident reportedly triggered an immediate review of the platform’s operational safeguards.
The National Disaster Management Authority is understood to have issued an advisory on June 12 directing that the system be placed on temporary hold while technical assessments are carried out.
Officials have initiated a detailed examination of the platform to identify the cause of the reported malfunction and determine what corrective measures may be required before services can resume.
The Cell Broadcast Alert System was developed as an advanced emergency communication network capable of sending critical warnings directly to mobile users during disasters, severe weather events and other public emergencies.
One of its distinguishing features is the ability to deliver alerts that attract immediate attention. Emergency notifications are designed to trigger a distinctive hooting or warning sound on mobile devices, ensuring that important messages are noticed even when phones are in silent mode.
According to reports, the incident under review involved emergency alerts allegedly issued by disaster management authorities in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, which caused mobile devices to ring during late-night hours, leading to concerns about the system’s operational controls.
The suspension is being described as temporary, with authorities expected to restore the service after completing technical evaluations and implementing any necessary safeguards.
The platform was developed indigenously by the Centre for Development of Telematics under the Department of Telecommunications in collaboration with the NDMA and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Launched in May 2026, the system was widely viewed as a major advancement in India’s disaster management infrastructure. It was designed to ensure that urgent information could reach citizens rapidly during emergencies such as cyclones, earthquakes, floods, tsunamis and other public safety incidents.
Before its rollout, authorities conducted nationwide testing exercises during which mobile users across India received emergency alert messages accompanied by notification sounds. The tests were intended to assess the platform’s reach, reliability and readiness for large-scale deployment.
Disaster management experts have emphasized the importance of robust emergency communication systems, particularly in a country as geographically diverse and disaster-prone as India. Quick dissemination of warnings can play a critical role in reducing loss of life and property during emergencies.
The temporary suspension therefore represents a significant pause in what was intended to become a cornerstone of India’s public warning infrastructure.
Officials are expected to use the review period to examine system architecture, alert-routing protocols and security mechanisms to ensure that future notifications reach only their intended recipients and function as designed.
The outcome of the ongoing review will determine when the Cell Broadcast Alert System can be reactivated. Until then, authorities are expected to continue relying on existing channels of communication for disaster warnings and public safety advisories.
