Sri Vijaya Puram, May 8: Anti-Narcotics Police Station continued its intensified crackdown against drug trafficking and narcotics-related activities in the Islands by seizing 2.030 kilograms of illicit ganja and arresting one accused during a special operation conducted near the exit gate opposite the old terminal building of Veer Savarkar International Airport (VSI Airport).
According to police officials, the operation was carried out on May 7, 2026 based on specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of narcotic substances through the airport route.
The special operation was led by Inspector K. Binoj, Station House Officer of the Anti-Narcotics Police Station, along with a dedicated police team comprising HC Laxman Rao, HC(SG) Tamil Selcam, PC Tulasi Rao, PC Basharat Ali and PC Karuna Kant Pandey.

During the operation, the police team intercepted a 19-year-old individual identified as Jamiruddin Gazi, a private labourer and resident of Gokarnee in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
Officials stated that the accused had arrived in Sri Vijaya Puram from Kolkata on an Indigo flight on May 7. Acting on intelligence inputs, the police team conducted a search of his luggage near the airport exit gate.
During the search operation, police recovered 2.030 kilograms of ganja allegedly concealed inside the accused’s bag. The contraband was immediately seized by the police team after observing all required legal and procedural formalities under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The accused was arrested on the spot and subsequently taken into custody for further investigation.
Police officials stated that the investigation is currently in progress to identify the source and supply chain involved in the transportation of the narcotic substance into the Islands.
Authorities are also attempting to identify and apprehend other co-accused persons and individuals connected to the drug trafficking network linked to the case.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of Suma Madda, DANIPS, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Narcotics), and the overall supervision of Rajesh Deo, IPS, Deputy Inspector General of Police (CID), Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Police officials said the successful seizure reflects the continued vigilance and commitment of the Andaman and Nicobar Police towards curbing drug trafficking and protecting the community from the growing threat of narcotics and substance abuse.
The Police Department has urged members of the public to remain alert and cooperate with law enforcement agencies by reporting suspicious activities related to narcotics trafficking or drug abuse.

Officials reiterated that public participation and timely information play an important role in strengthening anti-drug enforcement efforts and ensuring a safer and drug-free society across the Islands.
