Fisherman Dies After Falling into Creek During Return Journey Near Bakultala

Date:

Sri Vijaya Puram, June 15: A fishing trip ended in tragedy in the Bakultala region of Middle Andaman after a 38-year-old fisherman reportedly fell into a creek and died while returning from a night of fishing with companions.

The deceased has been identified as Bidhan Das, a resident of Tika Dera in Kaushalya Nagar. The incident is reported to have occurred in the early hours of June 15 near Shyamkund, an area known for its network of creeks and waterways.

According to information received, Bidhan Das had left for fishing at around 8 p.m. on June 14 along with two fellow fishermen. The group had reportedly spent the night fishing before beginning their return journey during the early morning hours.

Sources familiar with the incident said Bidhan was operating the dinghy while the group was making its way back when he suddenly fell into the water. The exact circumstances leading to the fall are yet to be officially established.

His companions immediately launched a search in an attempt to locate him. The effort was soon joined by fishermen aboard another dinghy that happened to be operating nearby. Together, they conducted an intensive search of the creek where Bidhan had reportedly disappeared.

After a prolonged operation, the fishermen managed to recover him from the water. The creek where the incident occurred is understood to be a crocodile-inhabited area, adding to the challenges faced during the search.

Following the recovery, those present reportedly attempted to revive him by administering first aid and trying to expel water from his body. However, despite their efforts, he did not respond.

The fisherman was subsequently taken for the necessary legal and medical procedures. A post-mortem examination was later conducted at the Community Health Centre (CHC), Rangat, to determine the exact cause of death.

Family members informed authorities that Bidhan Das had a history of seizure disorder. The information was reportedly corroborated by his father during the course of the inquiry. Investigators are examining whether the medical condition may have played any role in the incident, though officials have not yet reached any conclusion.

Fishing remains one of the primary livelihoods for many families across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, with fishermen often venturing into creeks, mangrove channels and coastal waters during night hours in pursuit of their catch. Such areas can present a range of risks, including strong currents, poor visibility, sudden weather changes and encounters with wildlife.

The incident has cast a shadow over the local fishing community, where Bidhan was known among fellow fishermen. Residents expressed grief over the loss and extended condolences to the bereaved family.

Officials have meanwhile reiterated the importance of safety precautions while undertaking fishing activities, particularly during night operations and in remote creek systems. The use of safety equipment, vigilance during navigation and awareness of personal medical conditions are considered important measures for reducing risks on the water.

The death of Bidhan Das has once again highlighted the occupational hazards faced by fishermen who depend on the sea and inland waterways for their livelihood. Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses and authorities complete the necessary formalities related to the case.
