Patna, Oct 29: Hundreds of Sub-Inspector recruitment candidates clashed with police in central Patna on Thursday while protesting the cancellation of the written examination for 1,799 posts, demanding restoration of the declared results and resumption of the selection process. The agitation has left candidates questioning the abrupt halt to a recruitment drive after months of preparation and multiple stages of selection.
Protesters broke through barricades and confronted security personnel at JP Roundabout after police stopped them from moving towards restricted areas. Although police pushed back the main group and cleared the intersection, large numbers of candidates remained in surrounding areas, keeping security arrangements on alert.
The candidates want the Bihar Police Subordinate Services Commission (BPSSC) to withdraw its cancellation order and reinstate the recruitment process. They accused the state government and recruitment authorities of harassing job seekers by scrapping the examination after aspirants had invested months in preparing and progressed through several stages.

The dispute centres on a BPSSC announcement issued on September 23, 2026, cancelling the main written examination for reasons described as “unavoidable”. The examination had taken place in two shifts on May 27, 2026. The commission said it would announce fresh examination dates separately, but the cancellation prompted protests from candidates who had expected the recruitment process to continue.
Thursday’s confrontation marked the second major demonstration by the aspirants this month. On October 5, candidates marched from Gandhi Maidan towards the Chief Minister’s residence and the BPSSC office. Police intercepted that rally before it reached JP Roundabout.

The recruitment drive covers 1,799 Sub-Inspector positions, and candidates are seeking the restoration of results already declared as part of the selection process. Their demand is for authorities to reverse the cancellation and provide a clear path forward for the recruitment exercise.
The latest protest underscores the uncertainty facing candidates following the commission’s decision to scrap the examination. With the fresh schedule yet to be announced in the commission’s statement, aspirants are pressing for the cancellation to be withdrawn and the hiring process to resume.
