New Delhi, Oct 29: India has secured green hydrogen and derivative supply commitments exceeding 5.55 lakh tonnes annually, linked to investments of more than ₹90,000 crore ($9.5 billion), as companies expand export agreements and domestic industrial demand, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said on Thursday.
As of October 2026, Indian developers had signed 23 major offtake contracts covering 5,55,610 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA), with more than 70% of the committed supply earmarked for overseas markets, according to the government. Companies signed 18 new offtake agreements in 2026 alone for more than 4 lakh MTPA of green hydrogen-equivalent products.
The government said Indian suppliers were offering competitive prices for green ammonia and green methanol, strengthening their presence in European and Japanese markets. Green ammonia is being positioned as a fuel for maritime bunkering and as a substitute for part of the conventional fuel mix in thermal power plants, while green hydrogen derivatives are also finding applications in fertiliser manufacturing and refining.

Among the major export agreements, ACME Group signed a contract with Japan’s IHI for 4,88,000 MTPA of green ammonia. The company also agreed to supply 1,00,000 MTPA of green methanol to Mitsubishi Gas Chemical. L&T and Japan’s ITOCHU have formed a special purpose vehicle to supply 3,00,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, with deliveries expected to begin in December 2029.
Reliance Industries has signed a long-term supply and purchase agreement worth more than $3 billion with South Korea’s Samsung C&T Corporation for green ammonia, with deliveries expected to start by 2028. Agastya is pursuing an offtake arrangement to supply 2,50,000 MTPA of green methanol to Sri Lanka’s SAR.
AM Green has secured three agreements. It was selected as the sole winner of the Asian lot in the H2Global auction conducted by Hintco to supply renewable fuels of non-biological origin ammonia to Germany. Hintco will purchase ammonia worth at least €585 million over 10 years, with initial deliveries expected in 2029. AM Green has also signed a firm agreement with Germany’s Uniper for 2,50,000 MTPA of green ammonia and a binding heads of agreement with Japan’s JERA for 70,000 MTPA over the long term.

Jouno Joules has signed an offtake agreement with Germany’s Select Energy for 600 tonnes per day of green ammonia, equivalent to about 2,19,000 MTPA.
Domestic demand is also being developed through the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition programme under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Agreements cover the production and supply of 6,70,000 MTPA of green ammonia to 11 fertiliser units. Separately, projects have been awarded to supply 30,000 MTPA of green hydrogen to refineries operated by Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum and Numaligarh Refinery.
